What drew you to Brenau?
I did a lot of fine arts in high school, including theatre. I found out about Brenau from going to the Georgia Theatre Conference and seeing the Gainesville Theatre Alliance tables. I've since changed what I want to do, obviously. But ever since I met some of the people from Brenau, I've fallen in love with the school. I wanted a new environment and just a new beginning. I wanted to make a name for myself without the influence of anything from my hometown or any of the general region I grew up in.
Why major in management?
I've always loved the idea of teaching and mentoring and being there for people, and I figured the best way to do that outside of a general education pathway was learning about management and learning how to lead and organize a team. A big concept that we talk about in our classes is the four functions of managementâplanning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Those are the big four things that I try to learn and apply to any leadership situation Iâm in.
What opportunities have you gotten through the Brenau University Jacobs College of Business & Media?
No. 1 is getting to work with the Sullivan Foundation through professor Kierra Herring. There are also plenty of industry visits. I got to travel with a group to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium last year, and we met with executives within the organization and figured out how the stadium runs behind the scene during a game day. My organizational leadership class met with some leaders from BAE Systems International, and we helped develop a new manager training program for them.
What advice would you give to incoming Brenau students?
You need to learn how to be comfortable with the uncomfortable. Everything in life is going to be a new experience for you, and youâre not always going to know what youâre doing. Itâs a terrifying prospect, but it is going to be OK, especially here at Brenau. I would not have gotten through my years here at Brenau without my peers, the influence of professors, and the faculty on campus. Learning how to be comfortable with new experiences and learning how to apply that is how we can actually grow.
