Meet Hanna Simmons, a Brenau alum who recently returned to earn her Master of Arts in Teaching🐯📝

Through Brenau’s TigerTEACH program, Hanna is pursuing her master’s degree online while continuing to work as a paraprofessional at Buford Elementary School.

“Brenau has shown me how capable I am, pushing me to do my best,” Hanna said. “I am capable of working a full-time job, giving 110% to my students and working through my assignments. I have loved being able to see what I am learning take place in the classroom.”

Hanna’s passion for education sparked from her experiences with kind and engaging teachers, and witnessing the positive impact her mother made as an educator.

“My mom was a teacher, and when I was younger, I often was right there with her, helping turn her classroom into a class family,” she said. “I knew I wanted this for myself. I want to create a loving environment where students can feel loved and know they are capable of anything.“

Congratulations to Dr. Fassil Fanta, professor of economics, for receiving a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award!!🎉🎉As a part of the 10-month program, Dr. Fanta will be hosted by Haramaya University in Ethiopia, which is close to where he grew up. Starting this September, he will teach economics courses for graduate and undergraduate students, conduct research, lead faculty development workshops, and help establish the university’s first Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence.

Q&A with Lina Diaz-Romero💕🎭✂️
Major: Costuming for Film & Theatre

What sparked your interest in costume design?
Since I was a kid, I just loved the world of cosplay. And then, my high school theatre directors found out that I was a cosplayer and said we should use those skills for the theatre department. I started figuring stuff out on my own, and then I met Pam (Workman). And she told me I should come to Brenau.

What are you enjoying the most about your major?
Just all the new things I’m learning. Even though I’m in such a niche area of craftsmanship, I’m learning new things all the time, which is very cool to me.

What project are you the most proud of?
My first project that I started when I got here was the wig for Junie B. in the production of “Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook.” That was a wig made completely of yarn. This was a big task for me because I had never crocheted before. So, learning that new skill was great.

What advice would you give to students entering Brenau’s Costuming for Film & Theatre program?
Trust in your skills and know that there is still so much for you to learn.

Chuck Leavell, keyboardist and musical director of the Rolling Stones and former member of The Allman Brothers Band, is performing at Brenau this summer!

An Evening with Chuck Leavell, “The Tree Man” Film, Songs & Stories will take place from 7:30-10 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, at the Hosch Theatre in Brenau’s Burd Center for the Performing Arts. In addition to an intimate concert, the evening will feature a screening of a 20-minute portion of the 2020 documentary, Chuck Leavell: The Tree Man, directed by Alan Farst.

The show is supported by the Ivester Programming Endowment and held in conjunction with the Jarrard Burch Foundation.

Looking for free physical therapy services? The ImpacTiger Pro Bono Clinic is back open for business this summer semester, and they’re accepting new patients!

Appointments are available at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. As a patient, you’ll receive free
evaluations, diagnosis, and treatments from Doctor of Physical Therapy students, who are supervised by PT faculty and PT volunteers.

As a school psychologist, Brian Bowman has dedicated his career to supporting students. And now, with his Ed.D. from Brenau, he’s ready to make an even larger impact on education across Georgia.

“Having this doctorate will not only allow me to provide better services to students, but also open doors to help prepare future educators at the college level,” Brian said.

During his years at Brenau, Brian said the help and encouragement of his education professors were paramount to his success.

“I appreciate the tailored support that I received from my dissertation committee,” he said. “I’m very thankful for the faculty of Brenau, and I’m excited to go into the world with this new knowledge and support the students of our state of Georgia.”

Why interior design?
I have wanted to do interior design since the fourth grade. I used to watch YouTube videos of interior designers like Rebecca Robeson, who has her own firm in California. She inspired me heavily. I was fascinated with her content, and that pushed me to explore this world. My mom has always been creative, and she wanted me to do something I’m passionate about. As I got further into this program, I realized this is something that I truly want to do.

What has been one of your favorite work-based experiences?
I feel like the field trips to ADAC (Atlanta Decorative Arts Center) have been the most influential because it’s basically a mall for interior design stores. As interior designers, we’ll be going there for source materials and types of furniture. Also, we recently went to a hospitality firm, which opened my eyes to the amount of money, time, and details that is put into the interior design for a hotel.

What has been your favorite part of being an interior design major?
My professors. Jill DeMarotta has made me realize how much details matter because when you get into the real world, you don’t want to submit work that’s not top-tier. And with Michael Kleeman, he has helped me push my design style and explore a more maximalist style. I went from favoring neutrals and Scandinavian design to a very colorful, fun, and playful design.

What advice would you give to first-year interior design students?
Prioritize time management. It takes a lot longer than you think, especially because you’re not just picking out colors, you’re having to be very detailed with the floor planning. You might think that an assignment will take an hour to complete, but it might instead take all night. Do your work little by little, and don’t leave it all to the last second.

Having recently earned her bachelor’s in biology at Brenau, Emelia Askew has set her sights on her next endeavor — medical school.

“I know the cliche thing to say is that I like to help people, but I do like to help people,” Emelia said. “However, I specifically want to help people like me who may not feel comfortable going into the doctor’s office. There’s not a lot of African American representation in the medical field, and I want to be that person who makes an impact.”

When starting at Brenau four years ago, Emelia explored different majors before settling on biology, which she calls her true passion. Emelia said one of her most memorable experiences at Brenau includes the time she shared her research at the university’s annual Innovation,
Inquiry & Creativity Symposium. Her research focused on a skin condition, which her younger sister has.

As she takes the next step in her career journey, Emelia said the two things she will miss the most are her friends and serving on Brenau’s basketball and track and field teams.

“I’ve been an athlete my whole life, and it’s not going to stop there,” she said. “I won’t be on a team, so I’m going to miss that a lot.”
