Stockton University’s Sociology & Anthropology Program

Stockton University’s Sociology & Anthropology Program Stockton University’s Sociology & Anthropology Program (a.k.a. SOCY/ANTH or SOAN) society and globally.

Sociologists and Anthropologists study human behavior in systematic ways within societies and cultures. Substantively, Stockton’s SOCY/ANTH program is particularly concerned with social justice issues such as those manifested in race/ethnicity, class, gender/sexuality, age, and globalization/imperialism. We also strongly emphasize community engagement and service-learning in both teaching and rese

arch. Our program highlights both qualitative and quantitative methods of research—for example, field methods and ethnography, interviewing, historical analysis, survey work, statistical analysis, and experimental methods. The curriculum of the SOCY/ANTH program gives students disciplinary knowledge and competencies in analysis, critical thinking, and verbal and written communication. These academic skills are coupled with a focus on cultivating engaged citizenship both at the university and in the community at large. We offer students opportunities to deepen their understanding of life in contemporary U.S.

"In Zikra’s eyes, being first-generation means not only finding mentors but also becoming one yourself. 'Being first gen means being a leader: someone who takes that first step towards something greater... I am now a mentor in [the GOALS/GEAR UP] program, helping students get ready for college... After graduating from Stockton, I look forward to finding ways to advocate for marginalized, underserved and misunderstood communities. Everyone has a story – some full of happiness but others full of pain – and I want to be in a position where I can help them through their journey of self-discovery like my mentors did for me.'"

Our new Archaeology Minor featured in Press of AC: "Stockton archaeology students choose a focus — general archaeology, classics, geoarchaeology or zooarchaeology. Studies can lead to jobs in research science, protecting or preserving heritage sites or museum curation... Dr. Hornbeck said archaeology has [historically ignored] Indigenous voices and perspectives in favor of Western science. She wants to use her skills to contribute to the decolonization of those histories. 'The discipline is undergoing a radical transformation,' she said. 'Many archaeologists and Indigenous tribal communities today are collaborating to uncover the truth about the past. There is still a great deal of work to do, but the discipline has been trying to make equitable and respectful research a priority.' The new minor provides students with opportunities to do hands-on research.

Stockton University has introduced a new minor in archaeology. Students must choose a focus — general archaeology, classics, geoarchaeology or zooarchaeology.
