Back-to-school season is a chance to think not only about what children will learn this year, but what we want them to know, understand, and be prepared to do by the time they reach adulthood.
The children entering kindergarten in 2026 are beginning school at a remarkable moment in the American story. They will grow up between the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the 250th anniversaries of the Constitution in 2037 and the Bill of Rights in 2041.
What if we treated these years as a connected civic learning journey, beginning early, deepening over time, and happening everywhere learning happens: in classrooms and homes, museums and libraries, historic sites and community institutions?
In a new essay, NCC Chief Content and Learning Officer Julie Silverbrook reflects on sending her own daughter to kindergarten this fall and what we can build over the next 15 years for the generation coming of age alongside the Civic Decade.
Our task is to make the years between these great anniversaries count.
