Last night, New Jersey Transit engineers went on STRIKE statewide. Engineers have not received a wage increase in 6 years and their wages have significantly fallen compared to inflation. Workers are on strike demanding that NJ Transit return to the negotiating table and offer them a fair contract that keeps their wages competitive with other railroads in the Northeast. The Stockton Federation of Teachers stands in solidarity with striking workers. We will be joining striking engineers at the picket line in Atlantic City and sending a clear message to NJT that they must offer our union brothers and sisters a fair deal!

Your union needs you to commit to joining striking workers at the picket line this weekend.

SFT will join the picket line outside of the Atlantic City Rail Terminal during three (3) shifts:

Saturday, May 17th 1pm-4pm
Sunday, May 18 th 10am-1pm
Sunday, May 18 th 1pm-4pm

Though you're likely looking forward to a little down time after submitting grades and wrapping up commencement, your union siblings from NJT need you to stand with them. Which three-hour shift can you commit to?

What’s going on?

The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLEM) is on strike after its members rejected, with 87% against, a Tentative Agreement (TA) with New Jersey Transit. While NJT did concede to their demands regarding health, welfare and work rules reforms, they refused to offer a pay increase that kept up with inflation. The wage increase offered was about 2.8% which falls short of the 4% inflation that much of New Jersey has experienced. This means that the workers would have faced a net decrease in pay. This slap in the face comes after six years of no wage increase whatsoever. As a result of NJT’s chronic underpaying, its workers make about 20% less than workers at other regional railroads like SEPTA, Amtrak, MTA, Long Island Railroad and Metro North.

Engineers are picketing all across the state including at the State House in Trenton, Newark, Long Branch, New York City, Morrisville, PA and Atlantic City. Negotiations are expected to resume Sunday evening. With a show of force from allied unions like AFT, striking workers may be able to force concessions ahead of the busy Monday morning commute.

🩺 SFT Fun Fact: World Tuberculosis Day 🌍

TB is an airborne infectious disease that primarily affects the lungs, and despite being preventable and curable, it remains one of the world's leading infectious killers. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 10 million people fall ill with TB each year.

Efforts to end TB require global awareness, early diagnosis, and equitable healthcare access all of which are crucial for workers' rights and public health advocacy! At Stockton Federation of Teachers (SFT), we recognize that protecting public health also means protecting educators and students in our communities.
