Medicine asks physicians to think critically, communicate clearly, and understand the human experiences behind patient care.

Those ideals are reflected in the Excellence in Basic Science or Humanities Selective Essay Award from the John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine, which recognizes fourth-year medical students whose essays demonstrate exceptional scientific analysis or an equally strong application of the humanities in medicine.

Congratulations to this year’s recipients, Anne Agee, Cecilia Arguelles, Sarah Muir, Caroline O'Connor, and Shilpa Rajagopal, on this recognition from the Academy and for contributing thoughtful work to the ongoing conversation around medicine, science, and humanity.

Some people make work easier simply because of the way they show up for others.

UTMB JSSOM Office of Educational Affairs recently celebrated Zainab Torrence as May’s Employee Spotlight recipient and Lyndsey Phillips as the quarterly Employee Shout-Out recipient; two recognitions shaped by coworker nominations and appreciation from the people who know their impact best.

Well-deserved recognition and one very important “certificate of awesomeness!”

Paws-ing for another feature in our Pets of UTMB series—meet Bentley! 🐾

Bentley is a 12-year-old, 75lb chocolate lab who followed me to the island for medical school! He hates long walks and the sound of a cough, but he LOVES to meet people, host house parties, go to the farmers market, and sneak treats! He has four loving dog moms in the house, and anyone who visits will be met with a tail wag!

One of the moments that makes UTMB John Sealy School of Medicine commencement so special each year is the presentation of the Gold-Headed Cane Award. Unlike many honors, this one is chosen by classmates, making it a reflection of the respect earned from the people who shared the long nights, challenges and milestones along the way.

The award recognizes compassion, leadership and dedication to patient care. Congratulations to Shilpa Rajagopala, this year’s Gold-Headed Cane Award recipient.
