Carlos R. Dostal, MD, PhD, FASAM, is studying kratom-related use disorder through his work in addiction medicine, focusing on what happens when use of the plant substance becomes a disorder.

Kratom, sometimes used for pain or to manage opioid withdrawal, can lead to dependence and withdrawal if used regularly. Dr. Dostal, along with Kathryn A. Cunningham, PhD, FACNP, FASPET, is studying the biological markers that could help explain why some people develop problems with kratom use while others don't.

Their project, “Phenotyping and Biomarkers for Kratom-Related Use Disorder,” was one of eight selected for a UTMB FY27 Clinical Research Directed Initiative (CRDI) program award.

Next up on our Pets of UTMB feature is Rex!

Rex is a 8-year old BOI chiweenie! He enjoys burrowing under as many blankets as possible, walking across keyboards when his roommates are trying to study, and sunbathing in the yard! You can find him wearing a variety of bowties and going on long walks in the evenings.

For Elena Shanina, MD, PhD, UTMB has been part of the story from the beginning.

After completing her neurology residency here in 2009, she was named the Department of Neurology’s Resident of the Year. Since then, her work has grown around neuromuscular medicine, bringing together patient care, research, and a commitment to teaching.

Today, she leads the Neuromuscular Division and the Neurology Clerkship, where her work with patients and students comes together. On Sept. 1, Dr. Shanina will become Professor of Clinical Practice in Neurology.

The title is new, but the story at UTMB has been years in the making.

When St. Vincent's House faced the problem of how to keep fresh food coming into its food pantry, UTMB's Blair Brown, MS, RDN, LD, CNSC, and Christopher Messenger, PhD, RDN, LD, got involved. A struggling urban garden came back to life. And it’s still thriving.

With the help of nutrition sciences graduate students, HOPE garden has nearly doubled in size, providing the food pantry with okra, eggplant, peppers and tomatoes, plus fruit, berries and herbs.

What was once just a patch of dirt is now feeding people in the Galveston community.
