Students don’t forget to join UTMB Police Department’s Annual National Night Out 2026! Tonight!!!

The UTMB Police Department cordially invites all UTMB students, faculty, staff, retirees, families, and members of our campus community to attend our Annual National Night Out Event on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Moody Medical Library Plaza
National Night Out is a nationwide community-building campaign that began in 1984 and is designed to strengthen partnerships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. What started as a simple effort to encourage neighbors to turn on their porch lights and stand together against crime has grown into an annual tradition celebrated by millions of people across the country. In Texas, National Night Out is observed on the first Tuesday in October and serves as an opportunity for law enforcement and community members to come together in a positive, family-friendly environment.

This special evening provides an opportunity to meet your UTMB Police officers, engage with fellow community members, learn about safety initiatives, and celebrate the partnerships that help make our campuses safer and more welcoming places to learn, work, and visit.

Tomorrow is UTMB Giving Day, but you do not have to wait to make an impact!

Early giving is already underway, and every gift can make a meaningful difference for our UTMB students through The Picnic Basket, UTMB’s student food pantry.

The Picnic Basket helps provide nutritious food and essential items to students who may be experiencing food insecurity, helping ensure that a lack of access to food doesn’t stand in the way of their education, well-being and success.

Join us as we go on October 6 and invest in our students by supporting a resource that helps nourish them throughout their UTMB journey.

This week’s Student News & Notes is packed with October events, campus activities, and ways to get involved at UTMB!

Get ready for the 17th Annual Plazapalooza on Wednesday, October 7, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Old Red Plaza. Join SGA and Student Life for BBQ, rock climbing, a mechanical bull, carnival games, music, treats, and more!

October also brings plenty of ways to connect across campus. Join UTMB Police for National Night Out on October 6 for free food, activities, entertainment, safety information, and the chance to meet UTMB Police officers and community partners. The School of Nursing will also host its Student Engagement Pop-Up October 6–7 with opportunities to learn about the NMDP “Be The Match” registry, wellness and self-care, campus resources, and more.

Walktober is underway, challenging the UTMB community to make walking part of their daily routine. Students can also check out upcoming programs including MSDCI’s Beyond the Textbook lunch-and-learn, Significant Figures biomedical journal club, the GTX-GEMS Space Medicine event, and a networking workshop for GSBS students and postdocs.

Looking to volunteer? October training sessions are available for The Picnic Basket Student Food Pantry, and ARToberFEST is also recruiting student volunteers.

Later this month, UTMB will host National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 24, providing a convenient way to safely dispose of unused, unwanted, or expired medications.

And don’t forget to save the date for the Spooky Cookie Open House, Haunted Hallway, and Howl-O-Ween Pet Contest on October 29!

Students can also RSVP for the UTMB Student Beach Bash on October 11 at East Beach for beach volleyball, wellness activities, games, and a relaxing day by the Gulf.

🏆🏖️ WE DID IT, TEAM UTMBEACH!!! 🏖️🏆

TEAM UTMBEACH IS THE WINNER OF THE ARCHITECTURAL ICON CATEGORY!!!

What an incredible day, and what an incredible group of students! 💙

After months of practicing, planning, designing, building, and showing up, these students gave it EVERYTHING they had. They powered through all the way to the very end, and today their hard work paid off in the biggest way!

And they chose a pretty special piece of UTMB history to bring to the beach. ❤️

Their sandcastle, OLD RED, the Ashbel Smith Building, represents the very foundation of UTMB. The building was completed in 1890, and in 1891 became home to the state’s first medical school. Old Red is also the oldest surviving medical school building west of the Mississippi River and has stood as a symbol of UTMB’s history, resilience, education and service for more than a century.

Today, our students honored that legacy in SAND! 🏖️🏰❤️

As Director of Student Life, I could not be MORE PROUD of these students. They represented themselves, their team and UTMB with dedication, creativity, teamwork and so much pride.

Congratulations, Team UTMBeach!!! 🎉🏆💙

You showed up.
You worked hard.
You never gave up.

Step into wellness this October!

The Academic Enterprise Office of Wellness is launching the Walktober Wellness Challenge, a 30-day walking initiative designed to inspire our UTMB community to make walking a daily habit.

Walktober challenges participants to intentionally dedicate 20 minutes each day to walking. We'll also feature fun engagement activities, weekly educational and motivational themes, bonus challenges, and signature walking experiences.

Dates: Oct. 1 to 30, following a kick-off event with the Provost on Sept. 30
