The Aerospace Medicine program at UTMB plans to launch an Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Fellowship in 2027, creating a specialized training pathway that combines diving medicine, hyperbaric medicine, and elements of aerospace medicine. Whether it’s the ocean floor or deep space, this innovative program trains doctors for the environments where people are pushing the limits.

We look forward to recognizing our graduates and all they’ve accomplished as they reach this exciting milestone.

Commencement begins Friday, August 21 at 10 a.m., with doors opening at 9 a.m. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Friends and family who are unable to attend can watch the ceremony live and celebrate from wherever they are.

Motorists who travel through Galveston County should be aware of upcoming traffic pattern changes in the State Highway 146/Interstate 45 corridor set to begin this weekend.

The SH 146 westbound connector ramp to I-45 southbound is scheduled to close and traffic will be rerouted beginning Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026. Related I-45 lane closures and traffic pattern changes are also expected during this phase of this long-term construction project. Employees, students and patients should check road conditions, allow additional travel time, and exercise caution when driving through the area.

Today, The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is proud to announce a historic milestone for the future of cardiovascular care.

The Sealy & Smith Foundation has committed more than $180 million to advance cardiovascular care, research, and education through the Sealy Heart & Vascular Institute at UTMB. This represents the largest philanthropic investment in UTMB history and one of the largest gifts ever made to a cardiovascular institute at an academic medical center in the United States.

This transformative investment will support the expansion of cardiovascular services across UTMB, including a new state-of-the-art inpatient cardiovascular hub at Jennie Sealy Hospital, a comprehensive outpatient cardiovascular center, advanced imaging technologies, and expanded research and education facilities.

Together with The Sealy & Smith Foundation, we are building one of the nation’s premier cardiovascular programs, improving access to world-class care, advancing medical discovery, and strengthening education for future healthcare leaders.

Congratulations to Will McWhorter on his appointment as chair of The University of Texas System Employee Advisory Council.

McWhorter, senior practice manager for the UTMB Correctional Managed Care, joined the council in 2024 as the first representative from UTMB Correctional Managed Care. He served on the Resources and Support Committee before becoming vice chair of the executive board in 2025.
