Sometimes, your career brings you right back to where it all started!

Nearly 25 years ago, Amber High began her journey as a nursing student at UTMB. She went on to build a career as a nurse anesthetist before returning to the classroom, this time as an assistant professor at the UTMB School of Nursing in Galveston, helping prepare the next generation of nurses.

Now, she draws on her experiences both as a student and a practicing clinician to mentor future nurses, sharing lessons that extend beyond the classroom.

In the latest installment of our Homecoming series, Amber reflects on her journey, the people who influenced her career and what it means to return to a place that has been such an important part of her story.

For 135 years, generations of visionaries, physicians, scientists, educators, and philanthropists have helped transform The University of Texas Medical Branch from a small medical school in Galveston into a leading academic health science center.

We’re kicking off a series of Homecoming features celebrating the people, relationships and experiences that make returning to UTMB so meaningful.

For Dr. Shawn Nishi, Homecoming is a reminder of a place that has been part of her life for more than two decades.

She first arrived at UTMB in 2001 as a medical student. Today, she serves as Chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine.

Along the way, mentors and colleagues became lifelong friends and trusted collaborators, relationships she credits as an important part of her journey and success.

Now, Dr. Nishi is paying that mentorship forward. Developing future leaders is an important part of her work at UTMB, making Homecoming a full-circle opportunity to reconnect with those who helped guide her while continuing that tradition for the next generation. Read more: https://utmb.us/gpa

UTMB will mark 135 years since its founding on Monday, Oct. 5, with a Town Hall from noon to 1 p.m. in the William C. Levin Hall Auditorium on the Galveston Campus.

Dr. Reiser will highlight accomplishments from the past year and discuss the FY27 priorities that will guide work across clinical care, education, research, and innovation. A Founder’s Day celebration will follow in the Levin Hall foyer.
