Extension activities are centered in each state's Land Grant Institution, created when the 1862 Morrill Act granted 30,000 acres of land to establish or support a university that would provide education and outreach in 'agriculture and mechanic arts.' Extension programs have a proud history of providing practical help to citizens for more than 100 years- but we've largely overlooked the ugly fact that land grants were available because indigenous peoples had been forced off their homelands. Cornell has committed to working with local tribes to understand and acknowledge how the institution has benefited from this dispossession; you'll be hearing more about it as we work through what we've learned. Land grant trivia: By the time Cornell was granted land, none was available in the state, so Cornell's landgrant was actually in Wisconsin- and there's a tiny town of Cornell, WI, that marks the location.
