Sarah Wilson, Ph.D., of Rowan University's Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering, received a $542,805 grant from the National Science Foundation to study how engineering graduate students navigate mental health challenges and what influences their decisions to seek professional support.

Wilson is collaborating with Joseph Hammer, Ph.D., of the University of Kentucky, and Sarah Jane Bork, Ph.D., of the University of Georgia, on the nearly $1.5 million collaborative project funded through NSF's EHR Core Research (ECR) program.

The research will examine how engineering graduate school environments, individual beliefs and social relationships influence students' decisions to seek mental health care. Findings will help universities reduce barriers to support and create healthier graduate learning environments.

Cassandra Jamison, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Experiential Engineering Education (ExEEd) at Rowan University's Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering, received a $398,883 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study how student choice in open-ended engineering design projects influences engagement, learning experiences and professional preparation.

This award marks a significant milestone in Jamison’s research career as her first major NSF grant as lead principal investigator, recognizing her growing leadership in advancing engineering education research.

Jamison serves as the lead principal investigator, collaborating with Smitesh Bakrania, Ph.D., and Jacque Tawney, Ph.D. The grant was awarded through NSF's Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE) program.

The research will focus on Rowan's signature Junior and Senior Engineering Clinics, examining how students select projects, what shapes their experiences and how those experiences contribute to their professional development.

Findings will help educators design more engaging and impactful engineering learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.

A team of Rowan University and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University researchers is turning collaborative research into a startup focused on helping bones heal faster and more effectively.

HydroPep Therapeutics is developing an injectable material designed to stimulate new bone growth and improve healing after fractures. The startup was co-founded by Sebastián L. Vega, Ph.D., an associate professor of biomedical engineering at the Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering, and Tae Won B. Kim, M.D., an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University and research director in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Cooper University Health Care.

The company grew out of a research collaboration that began in 2018, when Vega started working with Kim to address osteoporosis-related fractures in older adults.

✨ Meet our Student of the Week, Noelle! 💗🚀

Noelle is a senior studying Electrical and Computer Engineering with a passion for space exploration and a dream of becoming an astronaut or designing spacecraft! 🌎🪐 When she’s not in class, you can find her running, painting, playing piano, or exploring nature and Philadelphia with her friends. She’s also involved in a rocketry project and credits Dr. deVries as her favorite professor for the connections and opportunities she’s had along the way. 👩‍🚀

Noelle’s advice to fellow engineering students? “You are never trapped. Engineering is one of the most versatile fields in STEM, follow your passion and make the most of it!” 💡

And a fun fact? She has a betta fish in her dorm named The Honorable! 🐟💖

Congratulations to Nate Newcomb, a freshman in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Rowan University, on receiving the 2026 John Green Memorial Service Award!

A graduate of Pitman High School, Nate has demonstrated a strong commitment to community service and leadership. From volunteering with the Pitman Challenger League to serving on student council and captaining multiple varsity sports teams, Nate has made a meaningful impact on his school and community.

Established in 1990, the John Green Memorial Service Award honors the memory of John Green Jr. and recognizes an incoming freshman from South Jersey who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement, leadership and service.

Researchers in Rowan University’s Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering have developed a new way to measure how 3D-printed concrete deforms during printing and curing, revealing how lower layers respond to the weight and pressure of newly deposited material.

Led by Islam M. Mantawy, PhD, PE, and Behrad Koohbor, Ph.D., the research team developed a method that works backward through images of a completed structure to reconstruct how the concrete changed throughout the printing process. The approach could help engineers better understand material behavior, identify potential problems earlier and improve the quality of 3D-printed structures.

The project also reflects the college’s commitment to hands-on research and student involvement, with contributions from Nicholas Pagliocca, Anthony Mackin, Aly Ahmed and Jenna Migliorino.

Published in Experimental Mechanics, the study advances research at the intersection of engineering, materials science and additive manufacturing.

We are proud to see our students' hard work, creativity and teamwork recognized on an international stage!

A special congratulations to their advisor, Gina Tang, for her guidance and mentorship!
