Innovation, teamwork and hands-on learning are driving Rowan University’s Formula SAE team as students design and build the next generation of electric race vehicles.

Part of Rowan Motorsports and the Rowan SAE chapter, the student-led team is developing an EV Formula-style race car that integrates mechanical design, electrical systems, controls, safety and manufacturing. From concept and simulation to fabrication and testing, students gain valuable experience solving real-world engineering challenges while preparing for careers in automotive, electrification and advanced manufacturing industries.

With approximately 40 undergraduate students involved, the project showcases the power of experiential learning and interdisciplinary collaboration at the Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering.

Success in engineering is shaped by more than technical knowledge. A strong sense of belonging can play a critical role in helping students persist, grow and thrive.

At the Rowan University Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering, Justin C. Major, Ph.D., assistant professor of experiential engineering education, is researching how family support influences engineering students' confidence, sense of belonging and commitment to the field. Through surveys and qualitative analysis, the work examines how emotional, financial and informational support can impact student success, particularly among low-income students.

By exploring the human factors that shape academic achievement, this research is helping educators create more inclusive learning environments and strengthen pathways to student success.

Congratulations to our very own biomedical engineering student, Connor Castro, on earning a prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

Castro, a first-year Ph.D. student in biomedical engineering at Rowan University, is exploring how cells can be reprogrammed to better respond to their environment, work that could help advance future cell therapies.

Congratulations as well to Scarlett McCourt and Alyssa Singer on this incredible recognition. We are proud to celebrate all three Rowan students and their exciting research in health, environmental and planetary science.

As communities confront climate change, aging infrastructure and increasing disaster risk, researchers at the Rowan University Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering are advancing new approaches to resilient construction through large-scale 3D printing technologies.

Led by Islam M. Mantawy, PhD, PE., assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, ARC-LAB explores how additive manufacturing can create lightweight, high-strength structures using sustainable materials and robotic construction systems. The research includes applications ranging from resilient housing and seismic protection to rapidly deployable disaster relief shelters.

Supported by $1 million in federal funding, the work is helping expand research capabilities while providing students with hands-on experience in next-generation construction technologies.

Industry collaboration is deeply embedded in the Rowan University Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering experience, connecting students with the people, technologies and real-world challenges shaping the future of engineering.

Through Engineering Clinics, co-ops, research collaborations and industry-sponsored projects, students work directly with corporate and government partners to solve real-world engineering challenges while gaining hands-on professional experience.

From advanced manufacturing and defense systems to transportation infrastructure and AI-driven technologies, these collaborations help students build technical expertise, strengthen communication skills and graduate career-ready from day one.

“Industry-academia partnerships help solve this challenge. They fast-track students into a career and it benefits companies because they have potential employees more ready to work in their industry,” said Yolanda Mack, Ph.D., associate dean for industry partnerships and workforce development.

Featured in ADAC-ARCTIC’s Spring 2026 newsletter, Civil and Environmental Engineering graduate student Jillian Peslak is building an impressive path in environmental research and Arctic resilience.

Advised by Dr. Jagadish Torlapati, Jillian is contributing to the FIRE-WISE project, which Dr. Torlapati has led at Rowan since 2024. She joined the project team last year and recently completed the regional NSF I-Corps program, with Dr. Torlapati serving as the technical lead. Jillian is now in Alaska for an AmeriCorps Scientists in Parks internship at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve.

We are proud to see her work taking her so far.

At the Rowan University's Machine & Artificial Intelligence Virtual Reality Center (MAVRC), students and faculty are advancing research at the intersection of AI and immersive technology to solve real-world challenges in healthcare, aviation and defense.

Led by Nidhal C. Bouaynaya, Ph.D., MAVRC brings together industry, government and academic partners to develop AI-driven and VR-enhanced solutions that push the boundaries of innovation and workforce development. From adaptive learning environments to advanced decision-support systems, students gain hands-on experience with emerging technologies shaping the future.

“If you don’t understand a concept or make a mistake in a procedure while learning, the AI agent within VR can change the learning depending on the user,” said Bouaynaya.
