What can the plants people cultivate, consume and exchange teach us about society?

For Professor Julia Sarreal of Arizona State University's School of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies, that question opens new ways of understanding the past — and thinking about the future.

Her interdisciplinary research examines relationships between people and plants, including her work on the history of yerba mate. Plant materials can offer insights into historical resources and bookmaking, while Indigenous crops adapted to the arid Southwest can offer lessons about climate adaptation.

Taiwanese culture lit up the West Valley — literally. 🇹🇼✨

This weekend, ASU’s West Valley campus welcomed Phoenix’s Double Ten celebration, bringing the community together for an evening celebrating Taiwan’s culture, traditions and the growing relationship between Phoenix and Taipei.

From vibrant performances and community connections to a spectacular drone show, the evening showcased the people and partnerships that make cultural exchange possible.

Congratulations to Sherry Fox! 🎉🌍

Sherry is one of 15 ASU faculty members to receive a Fulbright award for 2026–27.
Fox will join the University of Prishtina in Kosovo, where she’ll introduce biological anthropology, expand research opportunities and mentor students while building connections among scholars in Kosovo, Europe and ASU.
Her work shows how expertise in forensic anthropology can cross borders — creating opportunities to learn from the past while building academic partnerships for the future.
