On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free. Today, Juneteenth honors that moment and serves as a reminder of our ongoing pursuit of freedom, equality, and opportunity for all.

Join us tomorrow, June 17th at 2pm, as we officially cut the ribbon on the Glenville Mural in downtown Glenville!

The mural is a collaboration between the City of Glenville, Gilmer County Commission, Glenville State University, the West Virginia State Folk Festival, and the America250 Mural Project.

The statewide America250 Mural Project provided funding for new and original works, honoring our rich heritage and vibrant communities through art. As part of this historic initiative, each of the state’s 55 counties received funding to create a hand-painted mural that celebrates both local and national pride. The Glenville Mural was brought to life by Joel Dugan with assistance from Hannah Sprout, Gabriela Reyna, and Salem Nichols.

We hope to see you there!
