Dean passed away January 9, 2024, in Midland Texas. Dean earned his B.S. degree in chemistry at the University of Akron, and his Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of Illinois. He joined the Colorado School of Mines chemistry department in December of 1961.
Dean received an award from the Amco Foundation for his outstanding teaching in 1970-71. He also was recognized by the Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Association for his continuing hard work and commitment to the students at the Colorado School of Mines. Dean taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Inorganic Chemistry. He also developed the undergraduate summer field session lab course, which he taught until his retirement. He had high expectations his students, but in spite of his gruff appearance at times, he was always sincerely concerned about them and their learning experience and his wish for success in their careers.
Dean was highly intelligent and talented man who accomplished many things, but it was not his accomplishments that defined him. Rather, it was his faithfulness in caring for what was important to him., whether it was teaching chemistry, enjoying trains or providing for his family. It was Dean’s love for his family that took him to Midland Texas, for the final stage of his life.
Dean is survived by his wife Joy, his daughter Katerina Scott and her husband Gary, his daughter Cheryl Fox and her husband Robert, and by his grandsons, David Scott and Daniel Scott. There will be a “Celebration of Dean’s Life” on Sunday, March 24, 2024 from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at the Colorado Railroad Museum, in Golden, Colorado. The gathering will be informal, but you will have an opportunity to share memories of Dean with others starting at 2:00 pm. Highlights of Dean’s life will be displayed through descriptions, pictures, and mementos as we reflect on his life.
