Fall classes start on Monday!!!! As we look forward to cooler weather we should talk about how hot it was this summer. The forest management technology students go through a rigorous summer program that is a character builder. Rain or shine studnts proved they got what it takes to make out in the field

This summer students took 4 classes. In forest protection students learn how to identify and manage forest pests. In the silviculture class students learn how to manage an active growing forest. Forest mensuration teaches students how to cruise timber and what to do with the data they collect. Students also take a forest ethics and law course that challenges their thought on what it means to be a steward of the forest.

Here are some pictures showing what our students got into this summer.

Thank you Canal Wood for helping us manage such a dynamic educational resource for our students!!

Thank you to Canal Wood LLC for generously donating $11,000 to our Forest Management Technology program and for helping to enhance our forestry students’ hands-on learning area! 🌳

Canal Wood and Jared Sasnett Logging Company thinned the property that serves as a space for students to experience conditions needing different forest management techniques. The timber was given to Canal Wood, and after the project’s completion, the company donated funds to further support our forestry program. We appreciate Canal Wood's willingness to help meet the needs of current and future WCC students. 💙💛

Tree's a Crowd!

But we love the company. Forest Fire Management students measure planting density and fuel loading in our loblolly pine plantation. Wildlife students measure habitat parameters and learn to ID birds by their calls.

Needles to Say, We love Pines!

Really, we're knot kidding. First year students attend their first forest measurements lab where they see some tools of the trade in action. Forest Fire Management students collect data to estimate loading of various fuel classes in our teaching forest.

We're Doing Pine, Thanks for Asking!

WCC Forestry students focus on loblolly pine this week. Loblolly pine, or "Pinus taeda," is our major crop in eastern NC.
Second-year students take small plots to collect information about the condition of a three-year-old planted stand. First-year students begin the process of felling and bucking some selected trees in a twenty-year-old overstocked loblolly stand.
