Featured Student - Maddison Grimes

A native of Goldsboro, Maddison accepted the invitation to join the Upsilon Chi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa because of “the possibilities it would give me throughout college.” She also shared that joining PTK reassured her that she was doing well academically and helped her work through moments of doubt.

When asked why she chose Wayne Community College, Maddison explained that she currently attends Wayne Early/Middle College High School and chose WCC as part of that experience.

Outside of the classroom, Maddison stays active by volunteering as a softball coach and working at Journeys. In addition, she shared that she has seven pets and four siblings to fill her spare time. Maddison also enjoys reading, writing, experimenting with hair, and spending quality time with friends and family.

After graduating from WCC, Maddison plans to continue her education at either the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill or Appalachian State University pursuing nursing.

Featured Student - Makaio Greene

Originally from Chapel Hill and now residing in Kinston, Makaio accepted the invitation to join the Upsilon Chi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa because he has “always wanted to be a part of an honor society.”

When asked why he chose Wayne Community College, Makaio shared that WCC offers “the best entertainment technologies program in eastern North Carolina for community colleges.”

Outside of the classroom, Makaio stays actively involved within the community by volunteering with What’s The Need, a nonprofit organization that provides assistance for those in need. He also performs with his saxophone at local events throughout eastern North Carolina. Beyond his passion for music and football, Makaio shared that he has two large dogs, which he dearly loves.

Makaio described himself as a visionary, explaining that his creativity allows him to produce songs, create scripts, and compose music. Along with his artistic talents, Makaio also enjoys cooking — a passion passed down from his mother — and currently cooks professionally.

After graduating from WCC, Makaio plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to earn a bachelor’s degree in music education.

Featured Student - Katherine Solis-Diaz

A native of Mount Olive, and proud of her Costa Rican heritage, Katherine accepted the invitation to join the Upsilon Chi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa because of her passion for leadership and personal growth. She shared that PTK seemed like “a great fit for me to push myself in finding new ways of expanding my influence on being a better leader.”

When asked why she chose Wayne Community College, Katherine explained that attending Wayne Early/Middle College High School provided her with the opportunity to earn an associate degree while still in high school, allowing her to get a head start on their education.

Outside of the classroom, Katherine is highly involved in leadership and service throughout the community. Her involvement includes the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Foundation, volunteering with UNC Health Wayne, serving with St. Mary of the Angels Catechism, working as a Certified Nurse Assistant, participating in Junior Leadership of Wayne County, serving as Chairwoman of the Goldsboro Mayor’s Youth Council, mentoring at WEMCHS, serving as Vice President of the Wayne County Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, leading the WEMCHS Earth Environmental Awareness Club as President, and participating in the WCC Honors Program.

In addition to her involvement, Katherine shared several unique fun facts about herself. She has named all of her pet fish after Kosher Dill Pickles, enjoys writing poetry, often does make up for friends rather than herself, and has always dreamed of becoming a well-known author.

After graduating from WCC, Katherine plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to major in Neuroscience and continue their education toward becoming a doctor and surgeon.

Featured Student - Sierra Malpass

A native of Goldsboro, North Carolina, Sierra accepted the invitation to join the Upsilon Chi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa because it was reassuring to be recognized for the hard work and dedication required to maintain strong grades while working full-time.

When asked why she chose Wayne Community College, Sierra shared that she first earned her GED through WCC in 2013 and later returned after receiving a promotion at work. Recognizing that Wayne Community College offered an Accounting and Finance program aligned with her career goals, Sierra decided it was the right place to continue her education.

Outside of the classroom, Sierra works full-time in the business office of a local ICF facility that specializes in the care of individuals with intellectual disabilities. She has dedicated five years to the organization, beginning as an Accounts Payable Manager before earning a promotion to Accountant.

In addition to her career, Sierra remains active within the community by volunteering at the local soup kitchen, supporting Habitat for Humanity ReStore, donating and recycling items from local estates, and regularly refilling local blessing boxes with food and hygiene items.
In addition to balancing work and school, Sierra enjoys spending time outdoors whenever possible, riding four-wheelers in the mountains of West Virginia, fishing, walking local parks, exploring the Cliffs of the Neuse, and enjoying time outside “like a houseplant,” as she humorously described.

Sierra also shared how proud she was of her return to WCC and the determination it has taken to balance work, school, and personal responsibilities while significantly improving and maintaining a GPA strong enough to earn membership into Phi Theta Kappa.

After graduating from WCC, Sierra plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, continue advancing within her current company, and potentially become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
