Featured Student - Sierra Malpass
A native of Goldsboro, North Carolina, Sierra accepted the invitation to join the Upsilon Chi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa because it was reassuring to be recognized for the hard work and dedication required to maintain strong grades while working full-time.
When asked why she chose Wayne Community College, Sierra shared that she first earned her GED through WCC in 2013 and later returned after receiving a promotion at work. Recognizing that Wayne Community College offered an Accounting and Finance program aligned with her career goals, Sierra decided it was the right place to continue her education.
Outside of the classroom, Sierra works full-time in the business office of a local ICF facility that specializes in the care of individuals with intellectual disabilities. She has dedicated five years to the organization, beginning as an Accounts Payable Manager before earning a promotion to Accountant.
In addition to her career, Sierra remains active within the community by volunteering at the local soup kitchen, supporting Habitat for Humanity ReStore, donating and recycling items from local estates, and regularly refilling local blessing boxes with food and hygiene items.
In addition to balancing work and school, Sierra enjoys spending time outdoors whenever possible, riding four-wheelers in the mountains of West Virginia, fishing, walking local parks, exploring the Cliffs of the Neuse, and enjoying time outside “like a houseplant,” as she humorously described.
Sierra also shared how proud she was of her return to WCC and the determination it has taken to balance work, school, and personal responsibilities while significantly improving and maintaining a GPA strong enough to earn membership into Phi Theta Kappa.
After graduating from WCC, Sierra plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, continue advancing within her current company, and potentially become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
