When Sa San came to the U.S. she knew she wanted to study nursing.

In 2022, she had a seven-month old daughter and was accepted into GRCC's Nursing program!

Sa recently completed her BSN at Davenport University as the first college graduate in her family.

“If you are a mom in my culture, you are expected to be just a mom,” Sa said. “I am showing people that it is possible to gain an education and have a career, even with a child and a husband. It’s a challenge for the people around me to understand this.”

Lexi Parden was in the radiologic technologist program when her husband was in a life-altering accident.

Thanks to the help of GRCC staff and resources, Lexi was able to balance caring for her husband and three children while being a student.

“This program is challenging, but it’s worth every second,” Lexi shares, “It literally changed the course of my life and that of my family. I know that sometimes it can feel overwhelming, but the great news is that you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. Everyone in the program is there to support you. If I can do it, so can you.”

Lexi has now completed the rad tech program and is working at Trinity Health where she is cross-training in MRI.

Celebrating four of our first-generation TRIO students!

Each of these students came to GRCC to pursue a career in STEM, thanks to the TRIO program they have found success at GRCC and will each participate in competitive research opportunities this summer.

“I think a lot of women undermine their achievements,” Gabriela Martinez-Rivera said. “You have to accept every accomplishment for what it is and recognize how far you’ve already come.”

“Our parents didn’t always have the same opportunities,” Daniela Alcantar-Nava said. “It’s not a lack of intelligence. It’s a lack of resources and opportunities.”

Join us in congratulating Daniela Alcantar-Nava, Gabriela Martinez-Rivera, Raven Roman and Dulce Reyes-Loredo!

GRCC Alumni Samuel Wright has gone from high school dropout to 4.0 student.

Samuel started at GRCC through the Reconnect program. Through his hard work and perseverance, he’s now preparing to attend law school this fall, with a full ride scholarship.

“Don’t let your past define you,” Samuel shares, “I made a lot of mistakes as a young person and put myself in bad positions. But I am not the same person I was then, and neither are you. I bet on myself, and I’m succeeding.
