Another accident in our area involving minors driving golf carts. Please beware of the laws:

On Monday, St. Joseph County Police responded to a crash involving a golf cart and a bicycle at Adams and Gumwood Roads.
When officers arrived, they learned both the golf cart and bicyclist attempted to avoid each other, but were unsuccessful. The bicyclist went through the front windshield of the golf cart. Thankfully, they only suffered minor injuries.
Officers also learned the golf cart driver was just 12 years old, while the passenger was 10. Thankfully, neither child was injured, although both were understandably shaken up.
We know golf carts are being driven on public roads throughout St. Joseph County, but it is illegal and it needs to stop.
𝐑𝐄𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑:
- Golf carts are NOT ALLOWED on any type of public roadway (sidewalks included)
- We do have an ordinance for “off-road vehicles” in the state of Indiana, but golf carts are not considered an “off-road vehicle”.
-Some jurisdictions have a different ordinance that allows them; however, St. Joseph County is not one of them.
Just like e-bikes, the St Joseph County Police Department will continue to stop and educate community members while out on patrol about the rules and regulations when it comes to these vehicles that are causing a lot of issues.
