I asked director, Dr Rand Harmon for some more thoughts our our upcoming play, Sin Street Social Club. Here is what he said...

Who doesn’t enjoy a big silly farce? Mainstays of the commercial theatre throughout history, famous farces include Miles Gloriosus or “Boastful Soldier”), by Plautus of Ancient Rome, Comedy of Errors (1592) by William Shakespeare, The Importance of Being Ernest (1895) by Oscar Wilde, A Flea In Her Ear by George Feydau (1907), and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962) by Stephen Sondheim, Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart. Contemporary farces that have caused commercial sensations include Noises Off (1982) by Michael Frayn, Ken Ludwig’s Moon Over Buffalo (1995) and Lend Me A Tenor (1986), and The Play That Goes Wrong (2012) by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields. Sin Street Social Club, by Denver Playwright/Performer Jessica Austgen, and playing UNC’s Langworthy Theatre April 23rd-26th, 2026, is a modern adaptation of a classical farce The Rover (1677) by Aphra Behn. The original play, with its outlandish characters and absurd antics of a trio of “men behaving badly” met huge success in Restoration London, propelling Behn to prominence and the notoriety of becoming the first commercially successful female playwright of the English Theatre. Come see Sin Street Social Club, in UNC’s Langworthy Theatre, and see how Austgen translates this historic farce into the 20th century, and how the “men behaving badly” receive the justice they deserve!

What does Rand Harmon (our director) have to say about SinStreet Social Club?

Outrageous and absurd plot elements elevate farce from more common forms of theatrical comedy. Farcical plots typically build around mistaken identities, misplaced or confusing objects, and/or lies compounded by other lies. Other common farcical tropes include rapid escalation of plot complications, slapstick physical humor (pratfalls, fights, chases), rapid entrances/exits through multiple doors, wordplay (especially b***y humor) and outlandish exaggerated characters. Sin Street Social Club, by Denver Playwright/Performer Jessica Austgen, and playing UNC’s Langworthy Theatre April 23rd-26th, 2026, provides audiences all of these! Come join us for a fun evening with this big silly farce. I challenge you to keep track of all the farcical devices that move Sin Street Social Club along to its hilarious climax.

Who is actually playing George? None other than senior musical theatre student Tyler Cox!

When I asked him about this show he said: This show has magic in its veins. It has refocused me time and again on the love I have for acting and for the people around me, and I can't wait to connect with everyone who comes to see the show!! The cast and creative team have brought something incredibly unique that really brings this production to life in a colorful way you'll have to see to discover!

Tyler Cox is a senior musical theatre major hailing from distant Windsor, CO. Some recent credits include Monty in Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, Jeff in [title of show], Panch in 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (LTR); Angelo in Measure for Measure, Thomas Andrews in Titanic, and Nathan Leopold in Never the Sinner (UNCO). He works professionally in film, music, and as a writer, and in his free time loves watching KU basketball, hanging with the best friends ever, and playing guitar.
