It’s NAfME Collegiate kickoff week and our officers have been working to plan events every day. Today is Service Monday and they chose to collect items to be donated to the UNC Bear Pantry.

Congratulations to our new faculty member, Dr. Kay Piña, for successfully defending her dissertation at Penn State today!

We are absolutely thrilled to have Dr. Piña, a general music specialist, join us! You can find her work in the Journal of General Music Education, Teaching Music, Southwestern Musician, and the Voice and Speech Review. She presents frequently in national venues such as the American Eurhythmics Society, and the American Educational Research Association conferences. Dr. Piña previously worked at Texas State University for three years as Assistant Professor of Instruction and Student Teaching Coordinator. Additionally, she taught general music and choir for 11 years in culturally and linguistically diverse schools in Central Texas. She is a past-president of the American Eurhythmics Society where she continues to serve as a Master Teaching Artist.

Music Ed showing up with strong representation at this year’s Future Teacher Conference! Our NAfME officers Noah Osuna, Sarah Rich, Micah Healy, Emi Brooker, and Madi Holshouser led a session “Music for All, All for Music” to three different groups of participants— demonstrating how music can be incorporated into any classroom. Some members of the pep band under the direction of Dr. Fredrick Brown welcomed students to the Performance Hall, and Madi Lujan participated in a student panel representing education majors of all content areas answering particular questions about majoring in education and life at UNC. They all crushed it and we’re grateful for these amazing students. We can’t wait to have music ed more involved at next year‘s conference!
