NASS seeks to enrich the UNC community through academic, social, and cultural programs that reflect

Sharing our gratitude today for Prof. Liz Gilbert in the Colorado School of Public Health who gifted this gorgeous weaving to Native American Student Services 💙

For years, Prof. Gilbert was integral to planning visits to UNC for high school students from Navajo Nation and visits of UNC students to Navajo Nation during spring breaks. She received the weaving from Alta Mitchell (Navajo) in 2011 and it hung outside her office in Gunter Hall. As she prepares for retirement, she is passing the weaving to NASS and it will continue to greet students in the front room of the Kohl House.

This was woven by Clarissa Tsosie (Navajo), a US Army veteran who works at Wingate High School in Fort Wingate, NM.

Prof. Gilbert has also gifted a number of books for NASS’s little free library! Please stop by Kohl House to browse the selection or take a look during our Indigenous Peoples’ Day Read-a-thon coming up.

NASS is thrilled to partner with UNC alum-led Voices of the Land on our Fall Day of Service! Please join us for a trail clean up along the Poudre River Trail on Tuesday, October 6 🍂🍁

Plan:
Meet at the 35th Street trailhead around 5pm to share tamales 🫔
Start our walk/trash collection around 5:30pm 🚮
Enjoy sunset and share stories about our connections to the land 🌅
Return to campus approx. 7:15-7:30 🚙

We love seeing our little free library getting good use and thought be better drop some new finds inside! Grab one before they’re gone or check them out from our friends at UNC University Libraries and High Plains Library District!

NASS’s own Tyrik Yazzie ‘27 recommends The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian! “In this story you follow Arnold a Native American boy growing up on the reservation, just like me. In this story it talks about going to a new place to get a better life for yourself, but feeling out of place and afraid that nothing is going to work out. This book has helped me more than I realize, because while looking back I feel as if I was in Arnold’s place when I first came out to UNC, I was just like him I felt alone and afraid to fail, then I remembered why I wanted to be here. I knew that this was the best place for me to be to be successful just like how he knew to transfer to a different school, this book gave me the sense of belonging I needed before I needed it.”

As the temps get cooler and you’re needing another dose of summer, maybe It’s Not Summer Without You will hit the spot? You could watch the show, but everyone knows the book is always better!

We will be celebrating Indigenous People’s day with free food, a host of vendors, and various styles of dance will be performed! We’ll be there all day.
