Pics of our 3rd year DPT students during their orthotics and prosthetics lab. During the lab students were able to practice with various prosthetics and orthotics. This allowed them to experience how they felt and how they impacted functional mobility.

They also worked through case studies to learn when to use different devices to different patient presentations.

Scenes from our Upper Extremity course from this past weekend in Mequon, WI. This weekend course was led by Dr. Erik Gregersen and had Froedtert and Emplify Health orthopedic residents, Bellin College fellows-in-training and PTs from the community.

They covered how to determine if the cervical spine is involved with shoulder and forearm pain, how to treat glenohumeral stiffness, took a deep dive into neurodynamics of the upper extremity, and appropriately prescribe exercises to load the shoulder, forearm, and distal upper extremity.

Master Yoda advised us to “Pass on what you have learned” (put in the comments if you know which faculty member inspired this post!). These DPT students did just that when they assisted Dr Weiss in teaching safe patient mobility skills to the Bellin College undergraduate nursing students.

PTs and nurses collaborate on a daily basis in many health settings like in an acute care or subacute care facility and these skills labs are helpful in setting this standard.

Gaining hands on experience practicing skills physical therapists use in the acute care setting is key while in DPT school. Last week our 3rd year DPT students focused on monitoring lines and tubes as part of their Physical Therapy Management of Complex Patients course.

While they have been exposed to managing lines and tubes earlier in the curriculum and during clinical rotations, they were able to use the Bellin College simulation labs to get the "full experience" as well as get "more reps" with these skills. Being able to manage the patient's bed, IV lines/pole, catheter, etc. all play into doing the basics - like transfers and ambulation - well.

This past weekend we held our Advanced Lower Quarter Techniques course in Phoenix, AZ. Tim Fearon led the course with a special visit from Cheri Hodges on Saturday. It is rare to get instruction from two experienced clinicians with both having well over 30 years of experience in treating people with MSK conditions.

A hallmark of this course, along with our other courses, is that we use participant input to guide how the course will play out. We are less rigid in our schedule and make time to cater the learning to what the people want. Course feedback consistently states how valuable this is and this course is no exception.

Thanks to all the fellows-in-training, PTs from MN, and Waits PTs who attended the course.
