For Chinyere Stevens, a 2012 NWTC Criminal Justice associate degree graduate, transferring wasn't simply about earning another degree. It was about discovering a path that would expand her opportunities and shape her future.

That path led her to earn a bachelor's degree in social work from UW-Green Bay and a master's degree in social work from University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Today, she is a licensed clinical social worker and program director, leading programs that support mental health in Wisconsin.

Career exploration is a little more memorable when you can get your hands dirty. 🔨

Last week, nearly 1,000 high school students were on campus for Brown County Home Builders Association's (BCHBA) Build My Future Brown County event. Students explored careers in construction, manufacturing, transportation, utilities, welding, and other skilled trades through hands-on activities and demonstrations.

Thank you to BCHBA and our industry partners for giving students hands-on exposure to careers that are critical to Northeast Wisconsin's workforce.

As we celebrate Manufacturing Month, we're proud to recognize the talent, creativity, and skill on display at the NWTC Green Bay Welding Rodeo that took place earlier this week.

Made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Navy, Office of Naval Research, both the NWTC Green Bay Welding Rodeo and the NWTC Marinette Welding Rodeo helped build awareness of welding career opportunities that directly support shipbuilding industry partners and workforce needs across our region. Together, the two events raised more than $7,000 to support welding students.

Here are the results from the Green Bay competition:

🥇 1st Place: Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding with "Little Blue"

Amateur
🥇 1st Place: Green Bay West High School with "Rising"
🥈 2nd Place: Green Bay Southwest High School with "Walk in the Park"
🥉 3rd Place: Green Bay Preble High School Team 2 with "Stinging Hornet"

The NWTC Green Bay Welding Rodeo is happening today, bringing together skilled welders, delicious food, music, and plenty of opportunities to see manufacturing talent in action! 🔥

You're invited to join us on campus from 3-6 p.m. to experience the excitement and check out the live metal sculpture auction, where one-of-a-kind pieces created during the competition will be auctioned off to support scholarships for NWTC welding students.

Also taking place is the Brown County Home Builders Association's Build My Future event, where nearly 1,000 local high school students will explore hands-on career opportunities in the skilled trades! 🛠️🧱

Where can an NWTC degree take you? For Karlie DeGrave, it was the next step toward a bachelor’s degree and a career in the legal field.

After earning her Justice and Community Advocacy associate degree in 2024, Karlie transferred to Lakeland University - WI, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2026 — all while working full time as a litigation paralegal at an Appleton area law firm. ⚖️
