First-Generation Friday ⚙️

For Aaliyah Williams, a junior computer science student, the road to Aggieland started with curiosity.

After learning about HBCUs in high school, she began researching, watching videos and exploring campuses, searching for a place that offered both a strong engineering program and a sense of community. She found both at A&T.

A lifelong STEM student who started coding in second grade, Aaliyah discovered her passion for computer science by watching Tony Stark in Iron Man. Seeing technology as something creative, innovative and capable of solving problems sparked a dream that eventually became a career goal.

Aaliyah’s advice: “Have the courage and audacity to stand tall, even when you’re stepping into spaces you’ve never been in before. If you fall or stumble along the way, it’s okay to cry, but always find the courage to get back up.”

For Kevin Moore '15, technology is at the center of his work, but people make it just as meaningful.

As a solutions architect at Dell Technologies, Kevin spends his days helping others navigate challenges, communicating across different audiences and learning something new with every engagement.

Kevin says N.C. A&T helped him step outside his comfort zone through experiences like Toastmasters, his senior design project and serving as an Aggie Ambassador.

It’s First-Generation Friday!

For Shanice Way, a junior civil engineering student, the journey to N.C. A&T began in an unexpected place: her high school yearbook class.

Through conversations with classmates about life after graduation, along with a panel featuring HBCU alumni, Shanice was introduced to new possibilities and a community where she could see herself thriving. Those experiences sparked her interest in HBCUs and ultimately led her to Aggieland.

Now, Shanice is driven by a goal of making a meaningful impact on her community while building a bright future for herself and those around her.

Through organizations like ncatnsbe and the guidance of mentors, alumni and fellow Aggies, she has found the support and sense of belonging that continue to shape her journey.

Shanice’s advice: “Just because you haven’t seen something done doesn’t mean it can’t happen. Never limit yourself to one lane, and never let someone else define what you can or cannot do. Your journey is yours to define.”

Introducing First-Generation Fridays!

Throughout the academic year, we’ll be sharing the stories of first-generation engineers who are making their mark.

First, meet Laila West, a sophomore mechanical engineering student. Inspired by a love of Legos, hands-on projects and figuring out how things work, Laila knew engineering was the perfect fit.

With the support of faculty, staff and fellow Aggies, she’s built confidence, embraced new opportunities and learned that you don’t have to have everything figured out to succeed.

Laila’s advice: “Keep learning, keep showing up, and remember that you belong in the room. Leave A&T having no regrets, knowing that you did all you wanted to do and have made a positive impact on campus.”
