Welcome to the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at North Carolina A&T State University, located in Crosby Hall. The JOMC Department is under the College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, which teaches students to Engage.Learn.Grow.Succeed. The department paces emphasis on two important foundations: The first is the liberal arts – areas such as language, mathematics, history, sociology, chemistry, psychology, politics, biology, ethics and the arts. With these foundations, students develop the ability to understand any and all parts of the world. The second is in the practice of journalism and mass communication – reporting, writing, editing, producing and disseminating reports and presentations, and managing media services. The department believes that by the end of a student's program of study here, they will be able to combine your understanding of things in the world with your ability to produce reports and presentations on the world. In this way, you will be ready to use your education in journalism and mass communication to advance your self, organizations, and communities. You will be ready to make the world a better place for yourself and others.

The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication has deemed Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, as News Engagement Day.

In honor of NED, JOMC student Jaquez Spivey used AI to build a news quiz app.

His accomplishment questions the notion that AI threatens critical thinking. Used correctly, AI enhances it.

Without the right prompts and the ability to think like a news consumer, this app would not have turned out as it did. Spivey had to tweak the app numerous times with different prompts to get it to work right.

Educators know the highest form of learning happens when students create. Spivey's creative juices, critical thinking skills, and AI's use of code brought this app to life.

JOMC Advisory Board hosted a virtual panel for our JOMC students. Three panelists were Brian Holloway (N.C. A&T), Shannon McKnight (Muggsy Bogues Foundation) and Kelsey Armstrong (Elon University). A few JOMC faculty were also present. The student moderator was Jyanne Guide. The topic was A.I. and Multimedia Storytelling.
