Welcome to the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at North Carolina A&T State University, located in Crosby Hall. The JOMC Department is under the College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, which teaches students to Engage.Learn.Grow.Succeed. The department paces emphasis on two important foundations: The first is the liberal arts – areas such as language, mathematics, history, so

ciology, chemistry, psychology, politics, biology, ethics and the arts. With these foundations, students develop the ability to understand any and all parts of the world. The second is in the practice of journalism and mass communication – reporting, writing, editing, producing and disseminating reports and presentations, and managing media services. The department believes that by the end of a student's program of study here, they will be able to combine your understanding of things in the world with your ability to produce reports and presentations on the world. In this way, you will be ready to use your education in journalism and mass communication to advance your self, organizations, and communities. You will be ready to make the world a better place for yourself and others.

Avery Patterson was a selected as a fellow in the third cohort of the Harvard DuBois Scholars Program. Working alongside Harvard faculty, Avery conducted archival research about a free Black family in Cambridge and their impact of 19th century Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This program allows her to strengthen her research skills, develop as a presenter, and explore the academic resources provided at Harvard.
