Dr. Charles Egeland, professor of Anthropology and Director of the Archaeology program, is one of the principal UNCG team members on one of new IGNITE grants to fund collaborative research that crosses disciplinary boundaries and engages with community partners! Learn more about how a collaboration between UNCG College of Arts and Science and CVPA faculty are partnering with researchers and trustees from the Strieby UCC in Randolph County, NC to explore a 19th century schoolhouse through cutting edge technologies.

This year the offered grants to encourage collaboration between College of Arts and Sciences faculty and faculty from other UNCG colleges and schools. One of the funded projects was submitted by AMSA’s Robyn Le Blanc in collaboration with Kevin Vanek in CVPA and Dennis LaJeunesse at JSNN! This ambitious new project explores how workshops minted coins in the Roman Near East—check out the graphic to learn more!

Extending a huge congratulations to Dr. Jonathan Zarecki on not one but TWO incredible honors from CAMWS—he is both the recipient of the 2025-2026 CAMWS Award for Excellence in College Teaching AND he was awarded a prestigious ovatio in recognition of his work for and on behalf of CAMWS and Classics. Congrats to Dr. Zarecki for these exceedingly well-deserved honors!

📣 AMSA is thrilled to be welcoming Dr. Ryan Baldwin to the department in the fall! Dr. Baldwin will join us as an Assistant Professor, specializing in Roman history, Latin, epic, and philosophy. Welcome Dr. Baldwin!

Congrats to our AMSA majors for their participation in the UNCG honors symposium and the UNCG undergraduate research expo! 10 AMSA and Archaeology majors presented posters at the expo and 3 at the honors symposium—and all did a great job! An extra-special huzzah to Jamie, Sheza, and Tori, who were awarded first or third prize for their work 🏆

UNCG’s annual undergraduate research and creativity expo showcases undergraduate research for the academic year. In 25-26, AMSA students and faculty conducted research on a huge range of subjects, from the technologies of ancient coin counterfeiting to ancient prophetic texts! Come to the expo today (Tuesday April 7) to see some of these projects in action in Poster Session E (2:15-3:15). See the second slide for a list of the TEN (10!) AMSA students showcasing their work!
