The students and faculty of the Department of Counseling and Educational Development are a diverse community of learners collaboratively engaged in research, scholarship, leadership, and service in the counseling profession. Our collective goals are to prepare professional counselors committed to providing culturally competent counseling services that enhance the mental health and well-being of families, groups, couples, and individuals across the lifespan, and to advocate on behalf of our clients and our profession. In support of its national standing, the Department seeks to advance the field through its educational goals, scholarly/research efforts, and professional leadership. Our Master's students specialize in "tracks," which consist of Couples and Family Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and School Counseling. We’re proud to see UNCG alumna Amanda Giordano, PhD, LPC, featured in the September 2026 issue of the American Counseling Association’s Counseling Today.

In “Tracing the Path from Trauma to Addiction,” Giordano discusses research exploring how early trauma, patterns of arousal, and addictive behaviors may be connected. She also points to a practical takeaway for counselors: care should address trauma and addiction together, while recognizing that trauma is only one part of a complex picture.
