As a 2025–26 Pubantz Artist in Residence in the Lloyd International Honors College at UNC Greensboro, sophomore Madison Karan explores creativity, technology, and humanity through Apotheosis, a multimedia novel narrated by artificial intelligence after the end of humanity.

Inspired by Karel Husa’s Apotheosis of the Earth, which she performed with the Symphonic Band, her project blends writing, original music, and handmade jewelry to reflect on the role of AI in creative practice. As Madison says, “The arts are a fundamental part of the human experience that cannot be replicated by a machine.”

Road trip! Over the weekend of February 27–28, UNCG music theory faculty and students traveled to Atlanta for Music Theory Southeast (MTSE). Dr. Karen Messina, Dr. Adam Ricci, and Dr. Gerry Lopez coordinated travel and logistics for the group.

Dr. Ricci opened the conference with its first paper, “An Adventure in 7s: Tigran Hamasyan’s ‘Nairian Odyssey.’” Dr. Clair Nguyen also served on the MTSE program committee.

Students participated in the workshop “Spirituals and Spirituality in Music by Black Composers,” led by Dr. Horace Maxile, Jr.

It was a wonderful weekend of scholarship, community, and musical exploration for our Spartan music theorists! 💛💙

Be a PAL and Support the UNC Greensboro Peer Artist Leadership (PAL) Program! 🎻💙💛

The Peer Artist Leadership (PAL) Program, started in 2014, gives our undergraduate string education and performance majors real, hands‑on teaching experience. Through both one‑on‑one and group lessons with K–12 students, PAL helps bring high‑quality string instruction to underserved youth in Guilford County while helping future music educators grow their teaching and leadership skills.

To keep lessons affordable, PAL depends on yearly support. Donations help cover undergraduate teacher stipends, accompanist fees, meals and snacks for students, and other essential program needs.

Your gift makes a tangible impact:
• $25 helps provide essentials like books, rosin, or new strings
• $50 equips a student with a new bow
• $100 supports a semester of partner lessons
• $250 purchases a violin for a student to use
• $300 funds a semester of private lessons for one student
• $600 covers a full year of lessons for a student

We’d love for you to support the PAL fundraising campaign or become an advocate and be recognized for the impact you make. Just visit the link in our bio!

Support UNCG’s PAL Program to help bring string music to local Guilford County students!

Saxophonist Franco Romero has long dreamed of studying beyond Cuba. “We are lovers of jazz and music in general,” he says, “but the dream is to go out there and learn from the place where jazz originates.”

Romero is now bringing that dream to life at UNC Greensboro. After his early training in Cuba’s conservatory system, a transformative mentorship at UNCG helped guide his artistic direction. Supported by scholarships from the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation, he continues to grow as a forward‑thinking musician within the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program, embracing new opportunities, deepening his craft, and pursuing his passion for jazz with purpose and momentum.
