Carson Fortune’s connection to ECU began long before he became a student. His parents met at ECU, and now he is continuing that family tradition alongside his brother, who is also a fellow Pirate pursuing a minor in business. Growing up with season tickets to football games, Carson was surrounded by ECU pride long before he ever stepped foot on campus as a student!

Now, the Pittsboro, NC native is building a story of his own. A junior Finance major concentrating in Risk Management & Insurance and pursuing a Professional Selling Certificate, Carson is putting the COB formula for success into action. He's taking what he learns in the classroom and putting it to work as VP for Recruiting for Gamma Iota Sigma, while gaining valuable experience through internships.

Last summer, Carson interned with CRC Group in Atlanta. That experience led to an invitation to return next summer, this time for an internship in Charlotte.

For Carson, the lesson is simple: get involved.

“Get involved. There is a student group for every single major in the COB. Go on as many trips as you can to network,” Carson said. “And don't forget about your professors, as they have industry connections and they want you to succeed by getting that internship or obtaining a full-time offer before you graduate.”

Carson’s story is a reminder that sometimes showing up, getting involved, and saying yes to opportunities can take you further than you ever expected. ☠️🌇🛫

Are leaders born or made? 💭🙋

The Student Leadership Board kicked off the year with a conversation featuring two of ECU’s most prominent leaders: Chancellor Philip Rogers and ECU Health CEO Mike Waldrum.

Students had the opportunity to hear directly from both leaders about their journeys, the people who shaped them, how they build strong teams, and what it takes to make difficult decisions when there isn’t always an obvious answer.

The conversation also explored leadership through the lens of ECU’s own story, from the university’s recent R1 designation to the difficult decisions and changes that come with leading an institution through growth.

It was an honest, thought-provoking conversation that gave students a chance to ask questions, learn from experience, and think more deeply about what leadership really looks like.

Two leaders. Two different journeys. One room full of future Pirate leaders. 🏴‍☠️👏

COB is taking off! ✈️✈️✈️

In just the last year, our Pirates have traveled to Germany, New York City, Miami, Kentucky, London, Bermuda, Raleigh and Charlotte - and these weren’t your ordinary trips. 🏴‍☠️

From competing with student organizations to traveling for business experiences and connecting with COB alumni, our students are getting opportunities to learn, grow and build connections far beyond the classroom.

And that’s the best part: you never know where getting involved will take you. 🌎

One club. One connection. One opportunity can lead to something you never expected.

Get involved. Say yes to the opportunity. See where it takes you.

🌟 Intern of the Week: Kenna Early!

Kenna spent her summer with Amwins in the RMI department, gaining hands-on experience across multiple areas of specialty insurance and growing her professional network along the way.

Most importantly, her experience confirmed her passion for pursuing a career in the insurance industry! 💼

We’re proud to celebrate Kenna and all she accomplished this summer! 🏴‍☠️

67 years later, Mac Ausbon is still impacting Pirate nation. 💛

A member of the Class of 1959, Mac built his career in accounting, but his connection to ECU and the College of Business has always gone far beyond the classroom.

As a student, Mac was involved in FBLA, finding community and connection during his time as a Pirate. After graduation, he carried that same spirit of involvement with him, becoming a longtime advocate for ECU and the COB and finding ways to give back to the community that helped shape him.

One of those ways is the Gwen Potter Scholarship, established by Mac in honor of Gwen Potter, an accounting professor from the 1950s. Today, the scholarship is awarded annually to a College of Business student, carrying Mac’s connection to ECU forward to the next generation of Pirates.

Mac’s story is a reminder that being a Pirate doesn’t end at graduation. It’s a lifelong connection and a commitment to helping others find their place in the community. 🏴‍☠️💜💛

Pirates putting their anchors down! ⚓

What a great way to kick off the year! Today, the COB Dean’s Student Leadership Council hosted the first annual Anchors Down bash!

Students stopped by to meet our organizations, connect with our incredible student leaders, meet faculty and staff, and discover new ways to put their anchors down within the College of Business. Students were laying the foundation for meaningful connections and making ECU their place.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by, shared their time, and helped make it a day to remember! We loved seeing so many Pirates come together.
