Thank you to Dr. Andy Read from the Duke University Marine Lab for joining us last week for our ECU Biology Seminar Series!

Dr. Read shared his research on the ecology and behavior of the strange and wonderful goose-beaked whale off Cape Hatteras.

This week, we welcome Dr. Andréa Presotto from ECU’s Department of Earth, Environment, and Planning. She will discuss “How Hunting Changes Animal Navigation: Implications for Conservation,” exploring how hunting can affect animal navigation and what that means for conservation.

Caleb Spruill "got hooked" by the ECU Brody School of Medicine where he will pursue his Doctor of Medicine degree. Caleb graduates this May with a degree in biology and public health.

We’re excited to welcome Kristen Hall Vaughan as our new Facilities Manager for the Department of Biology!

Kristen earned her B.S. in Biology from East Carolina University and now returns after working as a long-term research specialist at Brody School of Medicine.

Kristen’s work will be an important part of supporting the people, spaces, and infrastructure that make our teaching and research possible. We are fortunate to have her experience and scientific background joining our team. It’s especially rewarding to see one of our Biology graduates return to the department and contribute in a new capacity.

Please join us in welcoming Samantha Moore to our department!
Samantha joins our team in a new role focused on supporting student success and engagement, and we are especially excited to welcome her back as a proud East Carolina University alumna.

Her work will touch many important parts of the student experience, including student engagement and recruitment events, graduation recognition ceremonies, our Learning Assistant Program, and our Living Learning Community, to name just a few.

We are thrilled to have Samantha on board and look forward to the energy, ideas, and commitment she will bring to creating meaningful experiences for both current and future Biology students.

On Friday, September 11, 2026, ECU Biology hosted our annual What’s Up Bio!

The event was open to undergraduate students of all majors and gave students the chance to learn more about the many opportunities we have to offer. Including getting involved in research labs, serving as Undergraduate Learning Assistants, and participating in Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs). We also welcomed campus departments and clubs to connect students with opportunities happening across campus.

A huge shout-out to the various campus departments that tabled with us, our Biology Promoters, and all our department faculty and staff. Thank you for a successful What’s Up Bio! 🔬🧪

was honored to attend the ECU Thomas Harriot College of Arts & Sciences Luncheon on Friday, September 18, 2026. We joined colleagues from across the college in celebrating outstanding scholarship recipients and recognizing the generous donors whose support makes these opportunities possible for our students.

We were especially proud to hear from Hannah Lewis, a Senior Biology student and recipient of the Brandon M. Rasberry Memorial Scholarship, who was one of the featured speakers. Hannah shared her heartfelt appreciation for the many donors who have supported her academic journey, offering special thanks to Glenda and Maurice Rasberry for their generosity and encouragement as she works toward completing her Biology degree.

We are incredibly proud of Hannah and our Biology scholarship recipients, and we congratulate all the students across THCAS who were recognized today. We are deeply grateful to the donors whose generosity creates opportunities for students and invests in their success and their futures!
