📚 ECU students are helping bring literary history to light!

Three North Carolina Literary Review (NCLR) student staff members — graduate students Azner Alvarez and Sam Smith, and undergraduate intern Erin McLaughlin — recently worked in Special Collections to help a visiting scholar research letters from author Peter Taylor in the Stuart Wright Collection.

The visiting scholar, VCU Professor Michaux Dempster, previously published an article in NCLR about Taylor’s correspondence. After NCLR editor Margaret Bauer informed her about Taylor’s wartime letters in the collection, the students helped scan the materials and continued the work after Professor Dempster returned to Virginia.

NCLR has invited Professor Dempster to contribute another article based on her research once she’s had time to process all the work they did for her!

🍖🌮🎶 A celebration of food, culture and community is coming to ECU!

Next Friday, South Goes Global will bring the culinary traditions of the American South, the Caribbean and Latin America together for an afternoon of food, music, storytelling and cultural exchange.

Experience Eastern North Carolina’s whole-hog barbecue tradition, traditional Yucatecan cooking and more—plus free food samples!

🚨 Today is the deadline to submit a proposal for the 2027 TALGS Conference!

The TALGS (TESOL/Applied Linguistics Graduate Students) Conference will be held Saturday, February 6, 2027, at Greensboro College. The conference welcomes proposals related to language use, language learning, and language teaching from a range of disciplines.

Proposals may feature action research, works in progress, successful term projects, pilot research, discussion sessions, workshops, and posters. Multiple proposals will be considered.

What happens when an ENGL-1100 class turns into a debate stage? 🎤

Students in Ms. Knott’s ENGL-1100-27 section put their rhetoric and persuasion skills into practice with a Debate Day on Thursday! Students researched topics with their teams, then selected representatives to debate randomly assigned Pro or Con positions.

Topics included whether we should build on NC beaches, whether K–12 students should have phones in school, and whether the insanity defense should be allowed. Each debater had 60 seconds to make their case and 45 seconds for a rebuttal.

And one student came out on top, winning every round! 👏

🌍 Dr. Marame Gueye is continuing her international research collaboration with colleagues in Barcelona!

At the 11th Across Borders Conference in Cádiz, Spain, Dr. Gueye and her colleagues shared the next stage of their research on Senegalese street vendors in Spain. The project, previously presented at the 2023 Venice Biennale, will now focus on the lives of women left behind in Senegal.

The team will also organize an exhibition at the Dakar Biennale in November. We look forward to seeing where this next stage of the project leads!
