The medical school’s four new learning communities are officially open. The communities will offer a system of support for students who learned today which community they’d be joining throughout their time at Brody. The learning communities include the Bertie Buccaneers, led by House Dean Dr. Mary Lenfestey; the Roanoke Raiders, led by House Dean Dr. Don Norris; the Pamlico Privateers, led by House Dean Dr. Jill Sutton and the Cape Fear Corsairs, led by House Dean Dr. Juliana Jaramillo.
The houses will be more than communities. They are lifelong affiliations grounded in mentorship, service to eastern North Carolina and the foundation of physicians committed to improving the health care of others.

The 2026 class of Summer Biomedical Research Program scholars, 13, was picked from 193 applicants nationwide, 82 more than last year. “Word is getting out about ECU research,” said Srinivas Sriramula, program director. “This is a good indication we’re getting national recognition.”

This month Drs. Jason Hildebrand, James DeVente and James Whiteside along with ret. ECU Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Walter Pofhal (not pictured) accomplished The Rift, an off-road bike race in Iceland that runs along an active tectonic rift zone separating the North American and Eurasian plates. It took Dr. Whiteside 10 hours; he finished in the first third in his group.

Morgan Chesson (second from left) of ECU College of Health and Human Sciences, and M2s Charles Maus, Emma Nipp and Purav Shah delivered final reports over lunch at ECU Family Medicine as part of their Kolasa Kelly Summer Medical Nutrition Fellowships.

Nipp and Shah’s project included shopping for ingredients for healthy meals at a Bethel County Dollar General.
