A partnership worth celebrating!

In 2025, East Carolina University's College of Nursing launched a new Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) post-graduate certificate program — and this year, our first cohort of five graduated ready to care for the region's most critically ill patients.

Charlsie Woodard, Hunter Venters, Rachel Ferrell, Richa Dhungana and Angela Jones balanced full nursing careers with rigorous coursework and clinical rotations, leaning on each other every step of the way. Program Director Dr. Kristie Hertel helped guide them from bedside nurses and NPs to advanced critical care providers.

"Patients don't come from a textbook world," graduate Angela Jones said. "We have to critically think and look at the literature."

Huge congratulations to our first AGACNP graduates — and to the ECU Health partnership that helped make this program possible!

Marcia James is one of this past year’s inductees into East Carolina University's College of Nursing’s Hall of Fame.

In 2011, James co founded North Carolina’s second birth center, the Natural Beginnings Birth & Wellness Center, expanding access to safe, patient centered maternity care. She played a key role in securing approval for waterbirth at Davis Regional Medical Center, advancing evidence based birthing options for families.

Marcia was named the Preceptor of the Year in 2018 for excellence in mentoring and developing future nurse midwives.

Thank you, Marcia, for your being an exemplar of Pirate Nursing.

If you know a Pirate Nurse who deserves to be part of the next cohort of Hall of Fame inductees, nomination forms can be found here: https://nursing.ecu.edu/alumni/hall-of-fame/

Pirate Nurse Dr. Kristi Reguin-Hartman has been selected to serve as the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for Sigma Nursing, the nursing profession’s international honors society.

Reguin-Hartman, a graduate from our BSN and Clinical Nurse Specialist programs, is an adjunct graduate nursing faculty member at East Carolina University.

“We are thrilled that a Pirate Nurse with Dr. Reguin-Hartman’s expertise and experience will play such an important role in the development of the future of our profession,” said Dr. Bim Akintade, dean of the College of Nursing. "Service is the defining characteristic of Pirate Nursing, and she has fully embraced that ethos by accepting this new position.”

Sigma’s leadership said Reguin-Hartman will “provide strategic leadership on nursing practice, professional development, and global engagement while serving as the organization’s senior nursing executive,” rooted in her two decades of clinical, academic and leadership roles.

She was inducted into Sigma Nursing in 2011 and is also a member of several professional organizations, including the Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses, North Carolina Nurses Association, American Nurses Association, National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, and the American Organization for Nursing Leadership.

This year’s focus at the College of Nursing is wellbeing.

Yesterday, the Office of Engagement and Professional Development set up shop in the lobby to let students, faculty and staff know how the OEPD is prepared to support them and get feedback on how things are going and ideas about how to make the CON even more responsive and supportive.
