A research partnership between ECU and the U.S. Army Reserve is moving into its next phase.

ECU Chancellor Philip Rogers and Maj. Gen. Matthew S. Warne, Deputy Commanding General of U.S. Army Reserve Command, signed a new 10-year Intergovernmental Services Agreement valued at more than $6 million.

The agreement expands work that began in 2023, bringing ECU research and technology closer to active use at Army Reserve facilities nationwide. The effort aims to improve how facilities are monitored, maintained and managed while creating new opportunities for ECU faculty, students and researchers to support the mission.

The signing at ECU’s Science and Technology Building marked an important milestone in a partnership built around research, innovation and real-world impact.

What happens when your kids see your face on a banner at school?

For Dr. Chandra Speight, it became a moment to reflect on where she came from—and why she does what she does. Earlier this summer, the ECU College of Nursing faculty member and research Trendsetter brought her two children to see her award banner.

It reminded Chandra of her own mother, who didn’t attend college but encouraged her daughter to pursue an education and a career that would allow her to make a difference in the lives of others. Today, Chandra is doing exactly that—helping shape the next generation of ECU nursing students while advancing nursing research.

“It demonstrates the value of nursing science,” Chandra says, “and the power nurse researchers can have to make a difference in the lives of their patients and their communities.” Sometimes, a moment on a wall tells a much bigger story. 💜

We’re recognizing National Intern Day by celebrating the next generation of leaders in eastern NC.

Through the SECU Public Fellows Internship Program, 20 ECU students are spending their summer supporting community projects and public service initiatives while gaining hands-on experience that will shape future careers.

Meet Kennedy Hoskins, a senior majoring in Anthropology and History, who is interning with the Office of State Archaeology. “Having the opportunity to work in the conservation lab has been an incredible experience. It's something I'm genuinely proud of and always excited to talk about because it's helped shape both my education and my future career."
