The ECU Master of Library Science program is designed for students seeking employment as librarians and information professionals in Pre K-12 schools, universities, community colleges, public libraries, and related settings.

The ECU Master of Library Science Program is proud to celebrate MLS Faculty Member Dr. Andrew Zalot, the recipient of the 2026 ALISE/Norman Horrocks Leadership Award.

Established in 2009, this honor recognizes new ALISE members who demonstrate exceptional leadership in advancing the Association’s mission. The award underscores the importance of cultivating emerging leaders, strengthening member engagement, and honoring service that enriches the ALISE community.

Dr. Zalot’s recognition affirms their outstanding leadership within ALISE and their meaningful contributions to the profession.

The ECU MLS community is proud to celebrate this achievement and honor Dr. Zalot’s continued commitment to service, collaboration, and the advancement of library and information science.

The ECU MLS Program celebrates Ms. JoBeth Riker, who has received the NCSLMA MLS Scholarship. This scholarship supports students completing graduate coursework toward the MLS degree and the North Carolina Media Coordinator Certification. Ms. Riker’s hard work, academic strength, and passion for serving school communities shine through in everything she does.

We are proud to celebrate Dr. Tyler Youngman, Assistant Professor in the ECU Master of Library Science Program, for receiving the 2026 iSchools Doctoral Dissertation Award. Their dissertation, The Monumental Challenges of Pastmaking, was selected in a highly competitive international review process. This recognition highlights Dr. Youngman’s exceptional scholarship and meaningful contributions to the information profession. Congratulations, Dr. Youngman; the ECU MLS community celebrates you.

We close our alumni spotlight series with the outstanding alumna Ms. Sonya Parker, a School Librarianship graduate from the class of 2016. Ms. Parker serves as the Director of Media and Technology Services for Halifax County Schools. She fondly remembers the storytelling course from her time in the program and notes that she still uses those skills today when reading aloud to her nieces and nephews. She encourages current students to stay connected with their peers, as they become an essential part of a professional
learning network. Ms. Parker is helping build a brand-new K‑8 school, where she oversees networking and technology and has also contributed to the design of the media center, a bright and inviting space located off a courtyard with an amphitheater. Although still under construction, she already knows it will be her favorite place in the building. Congratulations, Ms. Parker!

We continue our Alumni Spotlight Series by celebrating Ms. Octavia Dorsey, an Academic Librarianship alumna from Summer 2021. Ms. Dorsey serves as the Learning Management System Administrator in Gardner‑Webb University’s Digital Learning Office and is the assistant secretary of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority’s Beta Mu Zeta Chapter in Gastonia, NC. She fondly recalls collaborating with a classmate on a community college study during her time in the program. Her advice to current students is to communicate consistently with professors and to find a classmate who can support and encourage them along the way. Ms. Dorsey also runs her own early‑elementary literacy tutoring service and recently began her doctoral studies in Organizational Leadership in Spring 2026. We are proud to highlight her continued dedication to education, leadership, and community service. Cheers to future Dr. Dorsey!

We are excited to feature our next MLS Alumni Spotlight, Libby Anderson, a Spring 2025 graduate in Public Librarianship. Libby serves as the Adult Services Supervisor at Rowan Public Library in Salisbury, NC, where she leads a team of seven, supports the reference desk, develops adult programming, and selects adult non-fiction materials for all branches. She remembers enjoying some of the most challenging courses in the program, including Reference, Collection Management, Organization of Information, and Research, which helped her explore the many pathways of librarianship. Libby encourages current students to gain as much hands-on experience as possible, even through volunteering, and to step outside their comfort zones to grow as future librarians. She received an SRRT travel grant to attend the 2025 ALA Annual Conference and now serves on ALA's Public Awareness Committee, continuing her commitment to service and professional engagement.

His experiences in the program, from assisting with community archives research to participating in the ALA Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) Conference, shaped his commitment to special collections and the broader archival field. Dylan now contributes through professional writing and ALA grant reviews that uplift libraries serving vital community needs. Join us in celebrating our MLS alum, Dylan Ward!

We are honored to launch our MLS Program Alumni Spotlight Series by celebrating several remarkable milestones for our class of 2011 alumnus, Mr. Kevin Vickers.
• Mr. Vickers is celebrating his upcoming retirement after 37 years of dedicated service to North Carolina.
• His recent induction into The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of the state’s highest civilian honors.
Kevin, a graduate of ECU’s School Librarianship program and the School Library Media Coordinator at Shiloh Valley Elementary, has built a career defined by service, collaboration, and a deep commitment to preserving community history.
Most recently, Kevin has taken on a significant preservation project sparked by the Union County Library. Working alongside Gypsy Culp Houston, Genealogy & Local History Librarian, and Yaviri Escalera, Communications Coordinator for Union County Public Schools, Kevin is digitizing nearly two decades of Inside News (1994–2012), the district’s internal newsletter. This collection documents the professional milestones and contributions of educators, administrators, and staff across Union County and will become part of the library’s Genealogy and Local History digital archives.
Reflecting on the project, Kevin shared:
“This project is a perfect example of what can happen when dedicated partners connect. I’m thrilled that the initiative of the Union County Library and the support of UCPS Communications have created this opportunity. It allows me, as an alumnus and volunteer, to ensure the historical legacy of our educators is preserved in the library’s digital home.”
During his time at ECU as an MLS student, Kevin served as the ALA Student Chapter President, remembering the “positivity and synergy from faculty, staff, and students.” He continues to encourage students to get involved through the ALA Student Chapter and the NCAE Student Services Division.
Please join us in celebrating Kevin’s extraordinary career, his service to North Carolina, and his ongoing commitment to preserving the stories that shape our communities. Congratulations, Kevin!
