According to recent market reports, Mississippi cattle markets have entered an early summer downturn. Under typical market conditions, calf prices decline slight between April and June, while feeder cattle prices generally trend upward and peak in August. However, current 2026 market trends indicate a continued decline in prices since April, raising questions about whether additional factors are influencing the market.

One potential factor is the ongoing drought affecting Mississippi, which has caused significant pasture deterioration across the state. Reduced forage availability can increase production costs and place additional pressure on cattle producers.

Furthermore, the recent confirmation of New World Screwworm (NWS) in Texas has introduced another source of concern for the livestock industry. As the situation develops, producers and market analysts alike are closely monitoring the potential impacts on cattle markets and herd management decisions. The parasite can cause severe animal health issues, and controlling both the adult fly and its larvae presents significant challenges. The spread of NWS could have far-reaching implications for animal health, production costs, and market stability.

🌽🌱The Southwestern Corn Borer remains a persistent insect pest of concern across Mississippi and neighboring states. To monitor populations throughout the growing season, pheromone traps have been deployed at four locations across Grenada County. These traps provide an early indication of increasing Southwestern Corn Borer activity within the county and help identify periods when field scouting efforts should be intensified. In addition, trap data can be used to guide insecticide application decisions in fields where consultants and growers are not utilizing their own monitoring traps.

Grenada County row crops are showing encouraging progress despite challenging planting conditions caused by multiple rainfall events. Cotton, corn, soybeans, and sweet potatoes have all emerged and are looking promising. The first cutting of hay is also underway across the county.
