Wendell Berry (1934-2026) passed away on August 31 at the age of 92. Berry was an acclaimed American novelist, poet, essayist, farmer, and environmental thinker whose writing explored the connections between faith, community, stewardship of the land, and the dignity of rural life. He is widely regarded as one of the most important Christian literary voices of the past century, emphasizing humanity’s responsibility to care for creation as a gift from God. Through works such as Jayber Crow, Hannah Coulter, and The Unsettling of America, Berry challenged readers to cultivate lives marked by humility, faithfulness, and care for place.

Berry held a special place at Grove City College, where his writings were deeply studied and celebrated, inspiring courses, scholarship, and the College’s 2025 Christian Writers Conference devoted to his work and legacy. He will be greatly missed. Stop by Buhl Library to see a special display of his works or visit our website for a complete list of his available collections.
