Nick Tiscione ('00) spoke last night on his work in forensic toxicology at the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office in West Palm Beach, Florida. He described the role of an analytical chemist working in forensic toxicology, the rigor required for chemical analysis in law enforcement (always two methods for identification of one compound) and the challenges of keeping up with the ever changing array of drugs found on the streets. Nick approached the challenging role of forensic toxicology in public safety with professionalism and a bit of humor.

Margi (Haiss '18) Brunson was on campus last night to tell us about her work as a chemist at Jamestown Coating Technologies formulating paints and coatings for industrial applications. Margi shared the parts of her education she uses daily (precision measurements, report writing and lessons from Chapel) along with the lessons that don't turn up frequently (subatomic concerns). Margi stressed having joy in your vocation (and passions) as she described paint formulation as the ideal intersection of art and science.

Dr. Max Majireck ('05) visited last night from Hamilton College (Clinton, NY) to talk about his work in synthetic organic chemistry. He described the joy of making novel molecules, the impact of basic research on real-world problems like cancer therapy and the appeal of inexpensive reagents and mild conditions for synthesis reactions. Learn more about Majireck's Reagent [2-chloro-1-(1-ethoxyethenyl)pyridin-1-ium trifluoromethanesulfonate] at https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/Majireck_s-Reagent .

Dr. Michael van Stipdonk of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Duquesne University will give a talk entitled "The Chemistry and Physics of Useful Destruction—Extracting Composition and Structure Information from Collision-induced and Photon-induced Dissociation and Tandem Mass Spectrometry" at 7:00 on 30 September in STEM 051. All are welcome to hear about analytical chemistry applied to a wide variety of fields.

Kirk Shelhamer ('97) had the student's attention last night as he talked about the many career roles in the paint and coatings industry for students majoring in fields from accounting to zoology. Some of the major themes were most of the large players in the industry have research and development facilities within a four hour drive of Grove City, networking and working well on a team are key skills, your career activities will develop such that you may have several divergent roles during your career and looking for a summer internship should begin in the fall of the previous year.

09/10/2025

Kirk Shelhammer will be presenting a seminar entitled "STEM Career Paths within the Paint/Coatings Industry" on 9/15 at 7:00 PM in STEM 051. The theme is on career paths in the paint industry. The outline is below:

Objective: Provide STEM students with an overview of career paths within the Paint/Coatings industry and direct relationship to current studies.

1. Provide an overview of the paint/coatings industry.
2. Provide correlation of current GCC studies that apply to the paint/coatings industry.
a. Chemistry
b. Biology
c. Mechanical Engineering
d. Electrical Engineering
3. Emphasize skill sets employers are looking for:
a. Intrapersonal, Problem Solving, Working On Teams, Project Management.
4. Importance of Internships. (Hear about opportunities as Sherwin-Williams)
5. Importance of networking in chosen career path.

Come at 6:30 to talk about internship opportunities, business networking or which color cars best survive road salt in winter.
