Engineering meets mountain rescue. ⛰️

Two EPP senior capstone teams partnered with the Western Mountain Rescue Team to design systems for real rescue scenarios. Both projects were showcased at Engineering Expo this spring.

One team created a truck-bed organization system to speed up gear access during missions, while another designed a litter wheel attachment to help rescuers transport patients across rugged terrain.

That’s a wrap on Engineering Expo, our biggest one yet! Thank you to everyone who showed up and supported our students. The energy in the building said it all. ⚡️

Congrats to our top three teams, Provuu, WCU Wind Tunnel, and Western Mountain Rescue Litter, with Western Mountain Rescue Litter also taking home the People’s Choice Award.

Shoutout to Camille Deranleau for the winning t-shirt and sticker design.

⛰️ Happy Decision Day! This is what choosing Western looks like.

Elijah Leblanc, a junior from Meeker CO, built a rotary engine in an Independent Study. He machined parts by hand and on a CNC machine, met tight tolerances, and got it running on compressed air.

💪The big win
“When I put it all together and it didn’t bind up. The timing lined up perfectly, or I would have had to remake the whole thing.”

⚙️ Along the way he learned CAM, manufacturing, designing parts to fit together, and project planning.

👉 His advice
“Do it if you have an idea. Independent studies are a good way to get credits, have fun, and learn. Talk to your instructors early and listen to design suggestions so you have time to do what you want.”
