Where can curiosity take you? ⬇️ ❄️

For Sydney Yelton, an Environmental Management senior on the Master in Environmental Management track, it took her to the vast, rugged landscapes of the Juneau Icefield, where she rappelled into crevasses and traversed more than 100 miles on skis. Sydney spent eight weeks this summer with the Juneau Icefield Research Program, investigating glacial thinning and changes in snow density, glacier depth, and glacier hydrological systems.

Sydney’s work contributes to 80 years of glacier research and helps climate scientists and communities develop science-informed management plans that support communities and ecosystems as glaciers continue to recede. Support from Western’s SOURCE grant and the Resilience Studies Consortium helped turn Sydney’s curiosity into an opportunity to contribute to glacier research firsthand.
