Western Colorado University announces a new low-residency Creative Writing MA/MFA in Nature Writing with a new turn called “Earth StoryCraft.” Earth StoryCraft marks intersecting social & environmental emergencies. We encourage imaginative storytelling for resistance of oppressive systems & renewal of land & Earth relations: https://www.western.edu/academics/school-graduate-studies/graduate-program-creative-writing/nature-writing-0

To apply, please go straight to our online application page. For a short time, we are pleased to offer a waiver of the application fee: just enter the special code GPCW2019.

Since our MFA program is multi-genre, we are happy to review whatever you consider to be your best work, whether that comes in the form of nonfiction, fiction, poetry, or any other written work—of any length. We also welcome storytelling in other media such as photographs, graphic arts, sound or video files, etc. If you plan to share any work that does not easily upload to the application, please just send us a direct link to it. In fact, if you encounter any other kind of obstacle to your application, please let us know directly so we can work out a solution for you. For other information about the application, try visiting our Admissions Requirements & Applications Page. If you have other questions about the program, contact Program Director Julianne Warren at [email protected].

We are thrilled to announce the newest member of the GPCW Faculty, Dr. Julianne Lutz Warren, incoming director of our Nature Writing MA/MFA, now being renamed as Earth StoryCraft MA/MFA.

Julianne's PhD is in Ecology and Conservation Biology, and appropriate for our program, she has repeatedly—and daringly!—reinvented herself, first as a natural historian and then as a writer of very powerful creative nonfiction, including her wonderful book ALDO LEOPOLD'S ODYESSEY. Julianne's work focuses on building bridges between ecology, natural history, philosophy, literature, music, and creative writing, transcending the perceived limits of disciplines.

Under Julianne's leadership, students in the Earth StoryCraft concentration will "discover fresh language and ways of telling at the crossroads of present social and environmental emergencies, to help people see possible ways forward.”

Julianne will be at our upcoming July residency to work with the concentration's first cohort. We're excited to have her aboard.

Visit our website for more information about our newly renamed program and to apply. More information about Julianne can be found on her website, https://coyotetrail.net/.
