Congratulations to Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management students Kajal Ghising and Ly Bao Tran Phan, who were named hospitality scholarship recipients by Destinations International!

“I’ve known about Destinations International from my experience in the tourism industry and this scholarship was really focused on HBCUs,” said Dr. Erinn Tucker-Oluwole, chair of the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management at UMES. “They wanted to help students at HBCUs studying hospitality and tourism management to be able to continue their education with a little bit more ease.”

Tucker-Oluwole said Ghising and Phan “made an impression” on the scholarship selection committee, showing the quality of students in UMES’s HTM program.

“I think it’s their willingness to be open to learning about different sectors,” Tucker-Oluwole said. “I think our students are really poised from a professional development perspective and how they carry themselves.”

Excited to support the first faculty-led student abroad from the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) at University of Maryland Eastern Shore was to Zambia, Africa. As educators, we have to embrace the continent of Africa into our teaching, research study abroad programs. Our global industry and our students deserve this knowledge. We must stop being afraid of the continent.

Congratulations to Dr. George Ojie-Ahamiojie, EdD, EdS, CHE for leading and the students for embracing this educational journey.

Today, we commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. with today being a National Day of Service. As faculty in the hospitality and tourism department, we understand the role service plays in our industry but also as the basic gift humans give to each other. Thank you to the hospitality and tourism faculty and staff at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore

Thank you Gov. Wes Moore for the announcement that the Maryland Board of Public Works approved funding for the Henry Hotel restoration project in Ocean City, MD. The Henry’s Hotel survives as one of a few 19th-century structures in downtown Ocean City. Built around 1916, the hotel and lot were acquired by Charles T. and Louisa Henry in December 1926. Previously known as "Henry's Colored Hotel," the enterprise was a full service facility catering to visiting African-American tourists and entertainers.
Pearl Bonner began managing the hotel in 1956. In 1973 she became the owner. Her family still owns the property today.

The Henry Hotel, a relic from the Jim Crow era, stands as a solemn reminder of a time when few establishments in the resort town welcomed black patrons. Vacant for over two decades, the Henry Hotel is now set to undergo a transformation, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Henry Hotel Foundation and a $250,000 grant from the state of Maryland.

See WBOC TV 16 Delmarva's News Leader report. Stay tuned for University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hospitality and Tourism Management involvement.
