⭐ Instructor Spotlight: Tom Kroon ⭐

A jack of all transportation trades – working in garages, dealerships, and shops; as a tractor trailer driver; and as a Frederick County Fleet Services Manager – Tom has been a Master Automotive Mechanic and Master Heavy Duty Mechanic since the late 1980s. After working for a short while in the water treatment industry, Tom returned to his love of mechanics and engine repair.

While studying to become a plumber at Frederick Community College in 2006, a friend called upon Tom to fill in as a small engine repair instructor at FCC. When a similar situation arose at HCC just one year later, Tom stepped in, noting his passion for seeing his students succeed making the decision easy. He has been with HCC ever since, taking on teaching OSHA forklift certification and heavy equipment operation as well.

“I love seeing the lightbulb that goes off – after seeing and hearing, then they get their hands-on – everything makes sense,” Tom says about his students. “I’ve had a number of them open shops, a lot of them work just for themselves, and they become the neighborhood mechanic.”

Another successful Hagerstown Police Department block party 🎉

HCC was out at the Mulberry Lofts Community Block Party last night, connecting with neighbors and sharing information about skilled trades, Continuing Education, and scholarship opportunities. Looking forward to the next one!

Milestone Unlocked!

We’re proud to celebrate a major achievement in our Project GUIDE Construction Pre-Apprenticeship Program!

Congratulations to Nana, Garrett, Jesse, Jilnae, Jared, John, Josiah, and Xavier for successfully completing Forklift Operator Certification Training facilitated by Hagerstown Community College.

Even more impressive, all eight participants are now:
✅ Forklift Operator Certified
✅ OSHA 10 Certified
✅ NCCER Core Certified
✅ Workforce Ready

These young adults have demonstrated commitment, professionalism, and a willingness to invest in their future careers in the skilled trades.

Top of the morning to you all! ☀️

They say the early bird gets the worm, and our Project GUIDE participants proved just that. They were up bright and early, traveling from Frederick County, MD to Hagerstown Community College to kickoff Group B’s Day One of Forklift Operator Training.

This incredible opportunity was made possible through the Maryland Department of Labor’s EARN Grant, providing our youth and young adults ages 17-24 with another industry-recognized credential as they prepare for careers in the skilled trades.

We’re proud of their commitment to showing up, putting in the work, and investing in their future. Stay tuned as we follow their journey!
