This Father’s Day, we’re celebrating the bonds that make the Hill so special. During commencement, Camden Libby ’26 and Caleb Camp ’26 had the honor of receiving their diplomas from their fathers—Steve Libby, water/sewer operator for the College, and Tom Camp, special projects technician for the College.

Happy Father’s Day to the dads who guide, encourage, and stand beside us every step of the way.

After Emancipation, formerly enslaved people, many with connections to Hampden-Sydney College, established “The Mercy Seat Community” on land south of campus. Some African American members left College Church and established their own Baptist religious community in 1867. For the next three years, funds were saved to buy land and build their church. A deed dated 1870 conveyed several acres of Slate Hill land from the Venable family to trustees of “the congregation of the Colored Baptist Church at or near Prince Edward Court House.” The church would later be named Mercy Seat Baptist Church. Generations of families have lived in the Mercy Seat Community and worked for Hampden-Sydney College, including members of the Brown, Evans, and Randolph families.

Today, Hampden-Sydney faculty and Mercy Seat Baptist Church members are collaborating on a CIC grant-funded research project to explore and reveal the shared history between our communities. Pictured in the second photo are Elliott Professor of History Caroline Emmons, Ewing Professor of Religion Mike Utzinger, and from Mercy Seat Baptist Church are Mr. David Miller and Mr. Danny Morton. Stay tuned for more information on the results of this research.

On Juneteenth, we acknowledge the profound contributions of Black people whose labor helped build and sustain the college. We continue the work to reveal and commemorate their lives. From the fall 2025 edition of the Record:

The journey to Hampden-Sydney College for Kamal Iqbal ’27 was shaped by resilience, courage, and an unwavering determination to build a bright future. After his family was forced to flee Afghanistan following the Taliban’s return to power, Kamal found his way to the Hill with the support of his family and the College community.

Now pursuing a degree in biology, Kamal has embraced every opportunity Hampden-Sydney has provided and continues to inspire those around him. With his sights set on a future full of possibility, he is ready to make a lasting impact through the experiences and opportunities he has gained on the Hill.

For Kamal Iqbal '27, his education and his vision have become the foundation of something inspirational: a life rebuilt stick-by-stick from the ground up, not in the shadow of what was lost, but in the light of what is still to come.

Tigers are taking learning beyond the Hill this summer! Students recently traveled to Greece with Professor of Classics Janice Siegel, Ewing Professor of Religion Michael Utzinger, and Assistant Professor of Chemistry Glenn Gilyot, diving into Greek literature while gaining a deeper understanding of chemistry’s impact on culture and society. What an unforgettable way to learn, explore, and grow!
