On Long Island, our sole-source aquifer is our drinking water supply and is our primary source of freshwater. Recent trends in the quality of our groundwater and surface waters on Long Island have been concerning. Rising levels of contaminants, declining marine habitats and top shellfisheries, annual algal blooms and the effects of climate change all threaten our waters and our estuarine ecosystem.

Join us for an informative presentation on the "State of the Bays" by Christopher Gobler, PhD. of the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University. We will also have an informative presentation by the Shinnecock Kelp Farmers, a multi-generation collective of Indigenous women who are enrolled members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation, leveraging a 10,000+-year-old traditional relationship with the sea and with seaweed to capture carbon and nitrogen that has poisoned the waters of Shinnecock Bay and beyond.

The Town of Southampton Road Review Committee reviews applications to improve certain roads as a condition of obtaining a building permit.

The Town's Traffic Mitigation and Safety Task Force was recently established to listen to, examine and evaluate on-going public concerns and potential mitigation/solutions relative to traffic.

Join us for an interesting discussion about the two programs, ongoing traffic mitigation efforts in the Town and how it affects you with Town Council member Michael Iasilli and Tom Neely, member of the Road Review Committee and Co-Chair of the Traffic Mitigation and Safety Task Force.

PRO-HOUSING COMMUNITY PROGRAM

In July 2023, Governor Hochul signed Executive Order 30 creating the Pro-Housing Community Program – an innovative policy designed to reward local governments that are working hard to address New York’s housing crisis.

Localities certified as Pro-Housing Communities are given preference in applications for key discretionary housing grants. Municipalities can apply for certification based on successful support for housing growth in the past and/or stating a commitment to addressing slow housing growth moving forward.

Join us for an interesting discussion about the program, its benefits and its requirements for participation with Town Council member Tommy John Schiavoni and Curtis Highsmith, Executive Director of the Town of Southampton Housing Authority.

Wednesday's meeting was a great success. We had a packed house of almost 150 attendees and it was standing room only! The discussion of Mr. Caiola's ideas and how the community feels about it was positive, respectful and lively.
