✨ Student Spotlight: Kenneth Austin '27 ✨

Kenneth is a powerful example of what can happen when talent, mentorship, and opportunity come together at Hampton University. Guided by Dr. Graham Chakafana, Kenneth earned the rare distinction of becoming a first-author published researcher as an undergraduate through groundbreaking research connected to Chagas disease.

Now, his journey is taking him even further: from presenting on national stages to an upcoming summer in MIT’s highly competitive research program.

Kenneth’s story is a reminder that at Hampton, students aren’t just preparing for the future, they’re already helping to shape it 💙⚓️🔬

Celebrating excellence, leadership, and legacy! A special congratulations to our newest Alumni Awardees recognized during last week’s Commencement ceremony 🎓

✨ Outstanding Alumni At Large: Michael A. Byrd '80 - A native of Virginia’s Eastern Shore, Mr. Byrd is a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel and former National Park Service comptroller whose distinguished career spans military leadership, financial management, and decades of civic service. Graduating from Hampton in 1980, he has also made a lasting impact through philanthropy, mentorship, community outreach, and nearly 40 years of officiating high school and collegiate sports.

✨ Outstanding Twenty-Year Alumni: Mr. Leon Chisolm '06 - Mr. Leon Chisolm, a two-time Hampton University graduate with degrees in Business Administration and an MBA, is the founder and CEO of Chisolm Communities, LLC, and the Chisolm Foundation, advancing residential development and educational opportunities across the Carolinas. A former JPMorgan Chase executive, he is recognized for his impactful leadership in business, philanthropy, and community advocacy, earning honors including Triangle Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 and Who’s Who in Black Charlotte’s 2025 Most Influential List.

Last week, Hampton University proudly commissioned our Army Cadets and Navy Midshipmen as Second Lieutenants in the U.S. Army and Ensigns in the U.S. Navy.

Made even more special, many of our newest officers were pinned by family members who once wore - or still wear - the uniform themselves, celebrating a proud legacy of service passed from one generation to the next.

Congratulations to our newest military leaders. Hampton stands beside you as your journey continues.
