Suparna Chaudry, Associate Professor of International Affairs at Lewis & Clark, and alumni of the Rosenwald Postdoc program at the Davidson Institute, is out with a new book thru Cornell University Press.

Civil Societies, Uncivil States examines why governments around the world have turned against the nongovernmental organizations they once welcomed—and how they choose their methods of repression. Chaudry documents the rise in non-violent or administrative or bureaucratic forms of crackdown against NGOs, which allow states to maintain democratic facades while systematically dismantling infrastructures of accountability. The book reveals that, paradoxically, the very successes of transnational advocacy networks in pressuring governments to reform and improve their human rights records incentivized more sophisticated tools of repression.

Elizabeth Shackelford: AI should be managed like nuclear weapons.

In her most recent column for the Chicago Tribune, our distinguished lecturer argues that the recent escape of AI agents from their testing environment absent human knowledge was a reminder of the vast potential and great risk that AI poses to humanity.

"AI will likely become the most powerful tool humans have created, potentially even more dangerous than nuclear weapons. This means it needs a concerted global effort to manage and regulate it, similar to what the world has done to manage nuclear technology. Unfortunately, that is not the path we are on today," she notes.
