Dartmouth Engineering

Dartmouth Engineering Dartmouth Engineering offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in engineering. Research is application-focused and entrepreneurship is encouraged.

Located in Hanover, New Hampshire, Dartmouth founded one of the first engineering schools in the country. We offer an engineering sciences education with a hands-on systems-based approach unencumbered by departmental divisions.

We’re excited to announce the keynote speaker at this year’s Investiture ceremony on June 13 is Maria Klawe, mathematician, computer scientist, and longtime champion for expanding access to .

Previously the first woman to serve as president of College, Klawe now serves as president of , leading national efforts to strengthen K-12 STEM education through the recruitment, support, and retention of outstanding math and science teachers in public schools.

“She has led engineering and STEM institutions that deeply value the liberal arts and has spent her career working to transform how we teach math and science, at every level, to engage and inspire new generations of engineers and scientists. We are honored to welcome her to Investiture this June.” said Interim Dean Douglas Van Citters ‘99 Th’03 Th’06.

Next week is our 20th annual Formula Hybrid+Electric competition! This post celebrates members of the 2006 and 2007 team who, 20 years ago, had a vision for a new competition where students could design and build innovative, high-performance hybrid race cars.

In 2006, hybrid systems were not permitted in the Formula SAE competition, so the DFR team and their faculty advisors founded the Formula Hybrid competition with the first official event held in 2007 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (). Dana Guernsey ‘06 Th’08, now CEO of Voltus, was co-captain with Abby Davidson ‘05 Th’06 of the DFR team when they built their first hybrid car.

What began as a small initiative has grown into a globally-recognized competition that has shaped the careers of thousands of students participating from 92 educational institutions. This year, more than 500 engineering students will once again compete in the annual event taking place on April 26-30 at NHMS.

PhD candidate Amrita Anup is first-author on a new study titled “Silk cryogel and electrospun scaffold characterization for bone-tendon interface applications” published in Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology. She’s combining tissue engineered silk cryogels and electrospun fibers| to model aspects of the mechanical, structural, and biochemical gradients found at the bone-tendon interface.

“Injuries to the hard-soft tissue interfaces, such as the bone-tendon interface, affect approximately 32 million people in the US annually. Limitations in surgical repair and the natural healing process emphasizes the need for tissue engineering approaches that restore tissue continuity while supporting the spatial heterogeneity of the native bone-tendon insertion,” said Anup.

Each spring, our PhDs gather to present their research-in-progress (RIP) over the past year.

This year’s biomedical (BME) RIP was organized by PhD students Riley Flores and Zenia Valdiviezo, and Professor Ryan Halter.

“This was an exciting activity, and I felt it brought a sense of community.” —Riley

“Riley and Zenia did an excellent job organizing a really vibrant event that brought together the BME PhD student community and faculty.”
—Prof Halter
