The Student Governing Board at Columbia University and Barnard College is only governing board comprised of student groups from all four undergraduate schools. The SGB represents around 100 political, religious, identity conscious, activist, and humanitarian groups on campus. Organized by the Office of the University Chaplain to meet student demands for a self-governing student caucus during the '
68 protests, the SGB has traditionally served as the guardian of free speech and students' rights on campus, and is the first and longest-running governing board. The SGB is also the home of the Chaplain's Council, created in December 2011 to serve as an advisory body to the Office of the University Chaplain.
