Art Education students collaborated with Waterman Elementary School for Hispanic Heritage Month! Responding to a request for a HHM special project Art Education students Noelia, Hannah, and Yadi presented a lesson on piñatas, showing the transnational history of piñatas and connecting tradition with contemporary artists who utilize piñata making in their artworks.

Graphic Design students from SADAH visited a special collection to deepen their research into the history of typography and printed letters. Through examining historical sources, including Bible leaves and the Book of Kells, dating from approximately 1200 to 1500, students explored the evolution of letterforms, printing practices, and the visual language of historical texts.

Prof. Zenab Bastawala expanded on the development of printing techniques, drawing connections between metal and wood type used in letterpress printing, hand-drawn manuscripts, and the evolution of printed communication. The exploration of ink on vellum also highlighted the significance of printed texts and the material practices that shaped visual communication during these periods.
This hands-on experience connects historical research with contemporary graphic design practice, encouraging students to observe, document, and draw inspiration from the rich legacy of printed letters and typographic forms.

Opening September 8: Pato Hebert: Sick Days.
In this solo exhibition, NY-based artist Pato Hebert addresses topics ranging from chronic illness and disability to viral impacts on neurology and language. Through multidisciplinary artworks, Hebert examines the complex relationships between health, identity, and community, offering timely perspectives on collective wellness and care.

That’s a wrap on the British Arts and Crafts in London study abroad! What an amazing trip emersed in British culture! Highlights from the final two weeks include visits to the V&A Kensington and V&A East, workshops including calligraphy, book structures and block carving and printing, London Transport Museum, the Museum of Brands, St. Dunstan’s in the East church garden, Old Spitalfields market and an afternoon tea cruise on the Thames! The students had plenty of free time to explore on their own along with a quick trip to Paris! Regardless of the heat wave the weather was sunny and bright! Until next time London!
