Seniors in the Social Work major at CHBS spend their final semester in field placements with local agencies, developing professional skills that bridge classroom learning with hands-on experience.

Ella Wesolowski (’26) spent her semester at Gemeinschaft Home, a residential reentry and recovery program serving men across Virginia who have been involved in the justice system. There, she helped these individuals apply for jobs, connect with local resources in Harrisonburg, and planned a Community Day program that brought together current and former residents alongside community members.

Through the experience, Ella witnessed both the deep challenges these individuals face and the hope, healing, and restoration that are possible through compassion and meaningful relationships.

CHBS professors Raihan Khan (JMU Department of Health Sciences) and Hui Zhao (JMU School of Nursing), and Valley Scholars Director Joshua Montanez, partnered with JMU X-Labs this semester to teach ENVT 400, an Environmental Problem-Solving capstone course grounded in real-world community engagement. Students worked to explore complex environmental challenges affecting local and regional communities.

Last week, faculty and community stakeholders gathered at Lakeview Hall as students presented their final projects. Topics included improving data collection processes for Clean Virginia Waterways, evaluating water service line identification and outreach in the City of Harrisonburg, and developing watershed sustainability strategies connected to Jubilee Climate Farm.

Through interviews, research, prototyping, and testing, students moved beyond the classroom to develop practical recommendations for environmental and community challenges.
