Institute for Creative Inquiry IICI cultivates interdisciplinary collaboration, fostering creative inquiry through team-taught stud

The results of collaborations across disciplines are extraordinary, and the experiences, transformative. ICI creates a supportive environment, removing structural barriers and allowing faculty and students to confront the intellectual challenges of interdisciplinary work. Creative inquiry fosters new ways of thinking; it makes us more curious and attentive about one another and the world around us.

Please join us on Wednesday, November 10 from 12pm-1pm at the ENGEO building, Room 1301 for Black Holes and Dancing Galaxies, a presentation by Dr. Anca Constantin (JMU Physics and Astronomy). Dr. Constantin will present some recent efforts for finding exotic galaxy systems, including evidence for the discovery of a triple supermassive black hole system that is actively snacking on its surroundings thanks to the gravitational smashing of their three host galaxies. She will also discuss some intriguing aspects about what it takes for a woman to wonder within the science space. Intended for both scientists and non-scientists, this talk is open to the public, and runs in conjunction with the Imaging Women in Space exhibition at the Institute for Creative Inquiry (Roop 208) and the second floor of EnGeo.

Please join us on Wednesday, October 13 at 7pm for a virtual screening of SNCC: A Film by Danny Lyon. Through his own photographs made in the deep south between 1962 and 1964, Danny Lyon tells the story of SNCC, one of the most effective grassroots organizations in American history. Using audio recordings made in churches and mass meetings, of the songs and music that drove the movement, and audio interviews Lyon made in the 1980’s of SNCC leaders, we witness the successes and crushing sacrifices of the movement that “broke the back of Jim Crow and changed America and changed the world, forever.” Danny Lyon will answer questions from the audience after the screening. Lyon weaves together two story lines; the story of John Lewis, who Lyon met in 1962, roomed with in Atlanta and was close to until Lewis gives his final, inspiring interview a few months before his death, then with modern interviews with Julian Bond and Dottie Zellner we learn the amazing story of SNCC, and James Forman, probably the least recognized of the great civil rights leaders of the 1960’s.

Please join us on Thursday, September 30 from 11am-1pm at the Institute for Creative Inquiry (Roop Hall 208) for the opening reception for Imaging Women in the Space Age. From the earliest moon goddesses to today’s galactic fashions, visions of females in space have sparked the creative imagination. This exhibit, which comes to us from The New York Hall of Science (NYSCI), showcases the achievements of America’s pioneering female astronauts and highlights the historic fascination with space women in movies, television, advertising, fashion design and today’s toys. One-half of the 38-image exhibit will be displayed in the 2nd floor hallway of ENGEO and the other half will be exhibited in ICI in Roop Hall 208 and both will run from September 30 – December 10, 2021. Curator Julie Wosk will give a brief curator's talk (virtually) Thursday Sept. 30 at 11:30, and remain for discussions afterward.

The College of Integrated Science and Engineering, the College of Arts and Letters, JMU History Department, and the Institute for Creative Inquiry (ICI) have teamed up to co-host this art and history exhibit . All are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.

The first spring colloquium at the Institute for Creative Inquiry will take place on Wednesday, February 19th from 12:00-1:00 in Roop 208. Aaron Bodle (COE) will give his talk “Made for TV Movie:” Using film to explore our embodiment of the professorship. Dr. Bodle will discuss an arts-based autoethnographic project exploring the roles he must play as an educational researcher through film making. He uses this approach to represent the complex, emotional experiences of his work. Two of these roles were the “slick salesman” and the “naïve, altruistic do-gooder.” His talk asks us to consider how researchers embody their own roles.Bring your lunch; dessert and coffee will be served. All are welcome.
